Any way to increase name draw distances?

Seems like I need to get super close to see nameplates. Is there a way to increase this?

How do I get a bit of guidance without getting too much?

I've been roaming around the island and found a few caves. I let myself get knocked out so I got the map and the compass which I feel will help but other than that, I'm just lost and confused. Any tips on how I get some hints?
