Hi everyone,
I’m 41M, 1.79 m and currently around 89 kg.
My recent bloodwork showed:
- Total cholesterol: 249 mg/dL
- LDL-C: 200 mg/dL
- HDL-C: 47 mg/dL
- Triglycerides: 70 mg/dL
- Non-HDL-C: 202 mg/dL
- HbA1c: 4.1%
My Lp(a) was 340 mg/L when it was last checked in 2022.
I’m on Mounjaro and have lost weight. I train around 4x/week, mostly Push/Pull/Legs. I’m also currently on TRT, but the elevated LDL - Lp(a) was already present years before TRT, so I don’t see that as the cause.
My main goal with this post is to understand what I can realistically do to lower my LDL and overall risk as much as possible, ideally without ending up on lifelong statins.
I know Lp(a) is mostly genetic and may not move much with lifestyle, but I’d like to know what actually helped others with LDL around this level.
Questions:
- What lifestyle or diet changes lowered your LDL the most?
- Did weight loss significantly improve your LDL?
- Did cutting saturated fat make a big difference?
- Did fiber/psyllium, oats, plant sterols or other changes help?
- Has anyone with LDL around 200 managed to bring it down enough without statins?
- If you did start statins, which one and what side effects did you actually notice?
- Did anyone stop statins because of side effects?
- Are there alternatives worth discussing with a doctor before committing to lifelong statins?
I’ll discuss everything with my doctor. I’m mainly looking for real experiences, especially from people who had high LDL plus elevated Lp(a).
Thanks.
