Trying to make sense of CPU temperature measurements

I am trying to see what's the actual CPU temp on my Protectli hardware and identify any peaks, but having understanding the measurements.

I have a 'Thermal Sensors' widget in my Dashboard and whenever I refresh it, it shows 70-80C temp for couple of seconds before it drops to green zone. Now if I go to Reporting -> Health -> System -> cputemp, and look for the CPU temp on the timeline, it never shows those spikes, and most I have ever seen there was 62C.

I also can't make sense of that timeline, since if I do Granularity: 1 minute, then it shows 62C as max temp, but if I do Granularity: 24h to see the full graph of 3 months, then max is just 51C. Shouldn't the 62C value be also part of the full graph?

Which way to would be more secure to attach hammock to a wooden structure?

Hi everyone! I would like to attach a hammock to my wooden terrace and was wondering if such 12mm bolt would suffice? Consider that I would run it through a thick wooden beam with bolts from other side. Would it handle 2 people in the hammock?

On the other hammock size I have straps connected around a beam so I don't need this.

An alternative could be a ceiling double hook mount. I am not an expert in metals, but feel like while it seems stronger at first glance, there I would be relying on a welding job itself, while with this hook from a singular piece of steel it's less likely to go wrong.

Recently I started having an issue where various trusted domains, such as google.com, or chatgpt.com would become inaccessible. This would last for couple of minutes and usually resolve on its own. I am using Unbound DNS with Quad9 and a standard Hagezi blocklist. Looking at Unbound DNS logs I see lots of SERVFAIL errors with 0ms on trusted domains which get dropped.

Could someone suggest what would be the next steps to troubleshoot when this happens again?

Hi, probably this was asked many times but somehow I couldn't find the exact answer I am looking for..

So I am looking to buy a Thunderbolt 4 dock for my MacBook Pro M3, to be able to connect 2 external monitors. Now both of my monitors have HDMI and DisplayPort outputs, and most TB4 dock have USB-C output for monitors (some have 1-2 HDMI/DP).

So my questions:

  1. If TB4 hub has DP or HDMI output, is that good, or I should still convert it into USB-C?
  2. For DP/HDMI to USB-C adapter, what's better - to connect HDMI or DP to USB-C? Are there any preferred brands/models for such adapters?

Btw in the title I mentioned hub, but I meant dock.

▲ 21 r/Proxmox

I just recently deployed Pulse monitoring solution for my Proxmox, VM and containers and have couple of questions on the security related things.

I did my own research but couldn't figure out this permissions concern of mine. Obviously Pulse is a monitoring tool I would prefer to not give it any write/root permissions if not necessary. Now I am normally logged in as root both to my Proxmox and VMs/LXCs. So I executed the agent deployment scripts on them using my default root user. Also when I check config at /etc/systemd/system/pulse-agent.service I see User=root.

So I have couple of questions:

  1. Is there a better way to run these agents e.g. with a lower priv user? (I only need read-only monitoring)
  2. Looking at agent config it says User=root meaning agent is running as root user. Is not a security risk? Or perhaps I should have created a non-root user with limited privileges and deployed agents with that user instead?
  3. Hypothetically, let's say this github account of Pulse gets compromised and consider that I deployed my agents as I did now (run script using root user). Would this allow a malicious actor to gain root access to my Proxmox/VMs/LXCs?

I am wondering what would be a stronger hook to hang a hammock:

  1. (Left) Double hook of 12mm diameter steel welded to a steel plate
  2. (Right) Single piece 12mm diameter steel hook

Assume that in both options it would be connected through the wood via bolts from behind. I know nothing about welding, but I feel like with option #1 I need to trust the welding job of this item. It looks solid, but what if it's not and the whole thing just breaks? Or is that not a concern?
