Sorting scrap steel for a better price?
Hello,
I’m in the midst of a big cleanup/disassembly project at work and by the end of it I’ll likely have several tons of scrap steel to shift.
From I read with this amount it’s probably worth my while to separate or sort the material into groups, but I can’t find consistent guidance on what those groups should be. I’ve put a rough summary of what I’ve got below, would appreciate any input on how to sort/group for best possible scrap value. It’s all steel and clean (no other materials attached)
- Fasteners: mostly 1/4”+ diameter, ranging from 3/4” to 4”+ length. Also corresponding nuts and washers.
- Bearings and Bearing Balls
- Cast Steel: all minimum 1/2” thickness
- Sheet Steel: 1/16” to 3/16” thick
- Machined Steel: machinery parts, various sizes up to about 24” length.
- Misc: bunch of small bits and pieces, machining swarf, retaining rings, roll pins, small (less than 1/4” dia.) fasteners, small stamped steel parts etc.
Cheers!
