WIP / my second attempt at a portrait

This is my second attempt at a dog portrait. This is my dog, Sable. From the back, she looks possessed 😂😂

And yes, I use knots 🙈

This was done on cream muslin with 1 strand of DMC 310 and one strand of Dual Duty XP in black. The stabilizer I used for the pattern left a residue so I won’t be using that brand again (stick with stick n stitch, it won’t leave a residue). This pattern was edited on my computer using a photo provided to me. This is for my coworker whose childhood dog passed last year. He asked for a portrait and I was like “I’ll try!” bc I had never attempted something like this. But jeez you guys, I’m thrilled with how this turned out, even with its imperfections 🥹😭🥰

Pattern by 20SomethingArt on Etsy! 1-2 strands of DMC 310, 169, and 928 on some fabric I found at Daiso 🥰 back stitches, satin, and split stitches

Posted this on r/embroidery, but thought you guys might appreciate it tooooo 🥰

Pattern by 20SomethingArt on Etsy! Done on black muslin fabric with DMC 3688/D415 + off white Dual Duty XP. You can’t tell from the pics, but one of those teeth is shiny silver. The edges were hemmed with a sewing machine but the rest is by hand.

Pattern by TheSeductiveStitch on Etsy.

Top is like bedsheet cotton (wrong fabric), bottom is canvas cotton. I used a medium weight stabilizer both times. Top is my first attempt, bottom is my third attempt. WHY DOES THE FIRST ONE LOOK BETTER THAN THE THIRD AND WHY DO BOTH LOOK AWFUL GENERALLY 😭😭😭😭

I historically have done blackwork so this type of embroidery is new to me. I hate how both look. I can’t manage to make a straight line of stitches, I keep making the wrong material choices. Is it the stabilizer? I can’t draw, so freehanding a pattern in heat erasable pen is out of the question. I tried so many changes from the first to the last version (stitch type, thread weight, sharper needle, more appropriate fabric) but I’m really beating myself up over my utter lack of progress.

I’m so frustrated. Please advise.
