This email from Angel Turner just hit my inbox. What is the strategy? Are they using the proposed and rejected (by the community) cuts of counselors and librarians as red herrings to make the next round of proposed cuts seemingly more palatable?

“Dear District 65 Community,

I am writing to share that we are reinstating the Middle School Library program. The decision will be brought to a formal vote at the May 18Regular Board Meeting. In alignment with the collective bargaining agreement, all educators will be notified of their 2026-2027 placement by May 22.

We care deeply about our schools and the decisions being made are guided by a commitment to preserving a high-quality education for every student in this community both now and into the future.

The work to address our District’s structural deficit is not easy but it's very necessary. We are continuing to work alongside the School Board to determine the best possible ways to achieve the required $6.3 million in budget reductions. We will continue to prioritize and retain student-facing positions and services as we have done in both Phase I and II of our structural deficit reduction planning process.

We are grateful for the engagement and advocacy of our community and thank you for your continued partnership.

Dr. Angel Turner (she/her)
Superintendent”
