Grade the two that got away… Invincible 1 & 2

Long story… I got out of collecting around 2003. I still loved comics but focused on other hobbies instead. My typical process prior was buy from my LCS and immediately bag and board every single book. When I read them, I did so with gloves and very clinically. Yes, it was excessive but also left me with nearly flawless copies. If the stories were great, I’d buy the TPB to read more often.

Fast forward to March 2021 as I was slogging through the pandemic. I finished an episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and saw an ad on my Fire TV for an Invincible TV show but didn’t think anything of it. However, I did remember that somewhere in a long box in my basement I had a Captain America series Truth: Red, White and Black that had an appearance by the first black Captain America, Isaiah Bradley.

What I found left me speechless… while I did have that Capt. series, perfectly preserved in the long box, right next to it was something far more valuable. Apparently, I had long forgotten and unread copies of Invincible 1 and 2. I missed the boat on the entire series, as if it never existed. Needless to say, I nearly had a heart attack when I searched the sold listings for Invincible on eBay. After some thought, I decided that the hype was high enough to make a quick cash sale for $1,200-1,500 locally on Marketplace. Little did I know that about twice a year since then I’d look at the same sold listing search and watch them climb higher and higher than I ever thought possible.

Now, in March of 2026 I have decided to get back into collecting and have always wondered “What if?” So, Reddit what do you say? If I had kept them and submitted to CGC how would they have graded? I know what I think but will reserve my number until a few responses come in.

April hauls and the two that got away…

I’m a 46-year-old collector out of Minnesota, finally jumping back into the hobby after nearly 20 years away. I stepped away around 2003, right around the time I walked into my LCS and picked up Invincible #1 and #2 off the wall just because they looked cool (I sold them around 2021 after finding them sitting in a long box right before the show premiered for $1,500 cash... oops). Seeing how much the landscape has changed since 2003 is wild but it’s been a blast catching up.

I’m currently working on a core collection. I’m not sticking to one era. I’m hunting Bronze, Copper and Modern keys that define comics for me. Favorites are Daredevil, Punisher, Spider-Man... Marvel “street level”. Favorite stories ever are Preacher and Watchmen.

April has been a whirlwind month. Here are the books that joined the collection so far:

Punisher Limited #1 Newsstand (CGC 9.4)

Punisher Ongoing Series #1 (CGC 9.6)

Preacher #1 (CGC 9.8): My personal grail and favorite series of all time. I’ve reread this series 1–2 times every year since the early 2000s.

Spawn #1 (CGC 9.8)

Ultimate Fallout #4 2nd Printing Pichelli Variant (CGC 9.6)

Marvel Team-Up #141 Newsstand (CGC 9.4): In transit.

My Strategy:

I’m not a "9.8 or bust" guy. I’m hunting for rarity and extreme value. I love Newsstand editions, and I’m actively looking for those "grossly underpriced" 9.6s or 9.4s where the market is sleeping on a rare variant just because it isn't a perfect 9.8. If the eye appeal is there and the price is right, I’m pouncing.

Where I’m headed:

The goal is to hit that core collection with a mix of historical importance and personal nostalgia. I’m currently digging into population reports for Bronze Age keys and looking for the next smart value play. Good to be back in the game. Happy hunting!
