Home studio recording - files and technique

Hi there, I’m fairly new to home recording and mixing etc.

I’ve got the basics of studio one but am looking to clean up a few things:

  1. What’s the best technique for file management?

Our band is pretty recreational and the studio is just my shed with sound treatment. Due to all of us having our own lives etc we tend to just do full band takes and currently I just create a new file for each recording session. So I’m ending up with a bunch of .song files for one song resulting in “Song name (4)” etc. Is there a better way to do this? Do you use versions?

  1. I’m struggling to find YouTube courses on studio one that cover this kind of music recording. So many of them are midi or beat songs etc. I have about 3 vocal mics and 2 drum mics, then 4 instrument lines. So I’m looking to EQ the room (adjusting the EQ across the different mics in the room) to end up with a nice balanced sound.

  2. When I export the mix down to mp3 or wav and listen on another device (phone, car, etc) the volume is significantly lower for the files than it is if I play YouTube or Spotify at the same device volume. I’ve tried using “Streaming” and “YouTube” for the adjust loudness setting and it doesn’t seem to help. Should I manually change the min/max volumes until it’s on par with other apps on export?

Thank you for your patience and kindness! I’m open to learning!
