[1571] Saint Seven: Dark Fantasy Short Story Opening

Crit [1822]

This is the first segment of a completed short story. Content warning for violence. It's not gratuitously described but it's there.

Any and all feedback is helpful and appreciated.

[Complete] [12K] [Dark Fantasy] Saint Seven

“. . . I am their Saint, their last bastion upon Ath Torren. I am the edge that cuts the world and the blood that weeps for it.”

SAINT SEVEN is a 12k, third-person dark fantasy short story. It follows the Swordsman, the living representative of seven gods as he tracks his stolen aspirant and combats a group of cultists with misguided designs to release a group of banished, traitorous gods upon the world.

While fairly polished, I’d still consider this an alpha reader situation. I’m looking for all manner of feedback: even just reactions are helpful. What makes sense, what doesn't? Does the style of the writing get in the way? Where (Hopefully not but lets be real) do you begin to lose interest?

If I ever want this thing to be (professionally) published I either need to cut 2-3K or add a good 10-20K more. So opinions on expansion of elements or the removal of others is especially welcome.

Content warning for violence. There is some gore but it is not gratuitously descriptive. The first few sentences will give you a sense of how violence is handled throughout.

Willing to work with reasonable time-scales. A few days to about two weeks.

I’m happy to exchange anything of comparable length or longer. I’ve got another project going–ye olde fantasy novel–and if we hit it off I’d be happy to have another critique partner.
