Mother’s Day.

Hello folks, I hope you’re taking care.

Just wanted to visit to wish you a calm, peaceful Mother’s Day. Whether you’re a mom going through this, your mom is going through this, or you lost your mom to this — I’m holding space for you. Bonus pic for what I made my mom for Mother’s Day. She has stage 4 NSCC & is going through chemo. I like to make her meals that are easy to reach for when she’s feeling like she can’t stomach anything. This is a Jewish noodle pudding recipe called kugel. It’s very rich & dense in protein & fat.

Im grateful I got to bake for her today. about to fill out her card & I’m tearing up.

Hugs to you all.

Hello, all. I completed my first bake this morning of my first ever sourdough loaf. My starter was born 4/16 - 50% whole wheat flour & 50% King Arthur Unbleached Bread Flour.

My method is below:

80g sourdough starter
250g purified water
350g bread flour
10g salt

  1. Mixed ingredient until shaggy dough
  2. Covered for 30 minutes & then shaped into a ball, covered again.
  3. 45 minutes after that, I did 4 sets of stretch & folds 30 minutes apart.
  4. 2 sets coil folds 45 minutes apart
  5. Covered for bulk fermentation - 6 hours @ 73° dough temp / 71-72° ambient temp.
  6. Shaped & put into floured banneton, covered
  7. 12 hour cold retard in fridge
  8. Added to 450° preheated Dutch oven on parchment paper & decreased temp to 400°. Cooked 30 minutes covered / 30 minutes uncovered.
  9. Waited an hour & cut.

It tastes really good honestly! It’s pleasantly sour. I suspect I could have let bulk fermentation go a little further, but I’m not too dissatisfied for my first loaf of sourdough ever.

Let me know what you think!

Hey, gang-

I hope you’re taking care today. I just wanted to share that today, I took my mom on a walk in beautiful weather around the park. It wasn’t too long, but it was beautiful. She expressed wanting to get out of the house more & go for a walk but didn’t want to go alone. So today we went on that walk. Photo is of her garden.

My mom was diagnosed a couple of months ago with stage 4 NSCC with bone & 1 small brain met. Shes been achy & ill from the chemo. She started Keytruda last chemo round without any apparent additional side effects.

I know nobody can put time limits on people. I’m just really grateful I got to walk with her today. That is all.

9 days after her birth, Winnifred “Winnie the Goo” finally doubled!

You all were so kind in helping me. The addition of whole wheat flour was a game changer. I went from feeding exclusively King Arthur unbleached bread flour to 50/50 unbleached / whole wheat. I also went from feeding her twice a day to once. I am floored! Thank you all so much!

I know she is still very, *very* young, so I will wait until she is reliably doubling in size for 3+ days after feed before using her.

For my first loaf, do you have any recipe recs? There are so many, it’s overwhelming!

Thanks again!
