How to properly use drawer adjustment screws

I'm attaching 1/2" birch plywood drawer faces to drawer boxes, also 1/2" birch plywood. I'm using these drawer adjustment screws (same as OP photo). I'm new to this, have a few questions:

  1. I did a test with 1/2" scraps from my project, and drilling a 1/4" hole for the drawer box side seemed to work well; big enough to allow adjustment room, but much smaller than the 1/2" screw head. Does that sound right, or is that too large a hole for drawer box front?
  2. Is a pilot hole necessary/recommended for the inside of drawer face, where the threads will grab?
  3. I have an 18ga nailer--should I add nails or regular wood screws or anything else to make sure drawer fronts will be secure for the long term, or will a couple of these per drawer be fine on their own? I'm hesitant to use glue, in case it sets before I get the faces aligned, and would prefer to have option to re-align in the future.

Thanks.
