Roots & Branches

Roots & Branches

Many artists I know personally have little or no formal training through secondary or art school. Yet, there are so many creative, insightful, thoughtful people around us who produce moving artwork, written work, music, wood work, jewelry, clothing and fiber artwork every day.

Here's to all the creators, long may your vision echo through time.

Mentors In May: Pockets

We have a pinch-hitter for today's mentor: Liz The Paper Project. I could not find the lady who taught me how to make, er strike that; *engineer* pockets, so I chose Liz.

She follows yesterday's Masterboards, in that we made one of ours, into a pocket she demonstrated.

There are two examples in this post; a simple wrap around slash pocket and a variation that looks like slash pockets but is folded square first.

| The wrap around is on one of Gail Agostinelli's two page Masterboards made from torn strips, affixed diagonally. The second slash pocket covers a scrap paper page with blue edging. Liz's YT page banner is affixed to a tag in the pocket.

| The opposite page is our square fold and it has four pockets. I used book page from a technical book, spray-dyed blue and coffee. The background page has the same spray-dye. I re-enforced the center with washi tape for stability.

Truth of the matter is, once I went looking for my mentors, some cannot be found and some have taken episodes down. It happens all the time on YouTube. As with yesterday's episode, there is a hint for what comes next, in today's 😉👍

Camelia Crafts is our mentor for Masterboards however, Gail Agostinelli also gets honorable mention, as she influenced the example page.

The cover image is a print of a Master board I use over and over.

  1. Next is a print of the masterboard collage I did for this prompt. The base is a packing envelope cut down to 12"x12," white gesso was used to alter some of the bare surface.

Rip & tear collage folder, white stamped handwriting and Walnut stain stamped letters in typewriter font.

  1. If you are disappointed in the way your masterboard prints, put parchment paper or tracing paper over your masterboard and try again.

  2. Still don't like it? Try folding it and cutting it. This collage shows what the masterboard looks like as 4"x5.5" prints or folios.

  3. Waaaaiiit, don't toss it...

cut it into strips, squares or rectangles and use them as collage folder.

Camila Crafts made a masterboard with horizontal 1" wide strips and rectangles. Gail made a masterboard of diagonal strips while I was working on this spread.

Finally, just fold it up and make a pocket ;)

"Hi, it's Gail. Happy Scrappy Saturday."

Gail Agostinelli is one of my long-time mentors. Most who have watched her videos will recognize Scrappy Saturdays.

In honor of her stash-busting days, I took the scrap piece of paper I use for edging as my inspiration. I love these geometric patterns, they show up as Master board collage folder, now and again. On the left page is a book page scrap background with a version of Gail's channel logo. Thanks Gail!👏🌷

There are lots of women who are girly-girls their whole lives, I am not one of them.

To all the women who pour their femininity into junk journals; I salute you🫡👍🐦

Of all the oddball drawing tricks or techniques, Chiaroscuro is probably my favorite. This technique forces the viewer to look at a familiar object in a different way.

| Chiaroscuro: A Renaissance technique meaning "light-dark," which often involves using white body colour on dark or colored paper. |

Sorry you only get a detail today, the rest of the two pages are notes.

Don't forget I have a theme running in a mini journal, Mentors In May. The first was megjournals of YT & Instagram. 🐦

Many of you already know who my first mentor is, from her JunkJournalJanuary and July challenges. This is megjournals on YouTube and Instagram.

Other than those two prompt challenges, if I asked her followers to name three things to describe her journals they might say; *Brown paper* small journals and scrappy.

This is her YT link: https://youtube.com/@megjournals?si=knprt8GTA18RSbBa

This month I've created a small journal in my version of Meg'style. I'll add other mentors throughout May😀👍🌷

This simple pocket example layout has 6 but could easily have 8 pockets. I used a collaged image of a butterfly, honeycomb stencil and a digital background print.

Elements of this spread show up in other journals over time. I take something away, I add something...

> it is one of my favorites😉👍🐝

While preparing new signatures for May, I found myself getting a little frustrated. Nothing seemed to fit together in this junk journal.

Finally, I resorted to YouTube University, et voila! Waterfall pockets would solve the problem of where to store a small booklet every month in the larger journal.

The happy accident is, I also made dump pockets just the right size for small stamp sheets. Two to store the stamps and one set of pockets for the stash.👏😄

The prompt was "letter." A little folio made from two personal mail envelopes. I used a scrap of file folder to strengthen it, printed postcard ephemera and washi stamps.

Can I find a permanent home for this one?

😉🌷
