Scoliosis Rant Day 7/365

Woke up this morning laying on my right side (my lumbar convex side) with pain. Felt like my ribs were literally pressing into my sides and thought about how it may affect my liver, kidneys etc after having taken probably 100 anatomy labs if not more (oh well perks of being a med student lol).

Derm related opportunities for med students in clinical years?

I literally don’t know what to do atp and I’m almost done with 2nd year. Right now I’m focused on boards but thinking about after. The only thing at my school was a derm chair position which was taken. I live in a rural area with no home derm program.

Any ideas?

Oh my, I had no idea there were so many people like me in the world—it’s truly surprising.

I used to think I was the only one living with this condition, and I often felt deeply discouraged, wondering, “Why am I so unfortunate?” But learning that there are actually quite a lot of people who share the same condition is really eye-opening. It even brings me a sense of comfort.

If you are worried about your kid having scoliosis, take them to the pediatrician NOW!

Excuse the medical jargon. While I am NOT a doctor, but I wanna tell you my personal experience. I was diagnosed with moderate-severe scoliosis when I was 18. They told me at that point no brace or non-surgical interventions would help.

While PT helped me control my symptoms, it is believed that it won’t stop the progression of the curve.

Hence, you should NEVER wait on your kid’s health. Take them to the doctor as early as possible! Especially if they also have any other symptoms including skin manifestations, weird spots etc. there could be a systemic disease going on!!!

Scoliosis Rant Day 6/365

It’s happening again. Those random shoulder spasms in my trap area. Got intense during OMM lab with trap release treatment. Would avoid next time!

Scoliosis Rant Day 5/365

Was walking up stairs in school and could feel the asymmetry of my hip movement. Kinda weird when you notice it.

Scoliosis Rant Day 4/365

Got my period today and back’s already hurting from sitting all day studying (which I have to continue to do) and now got terrible cramps on top of that :(

Scoliosis Rant Day 3/365

Had to sit through a 4 hour practice exam today with only one break, and my back felt so stiff and my left shoulder started hurting mid way. Not to mention my neck felt so tight and had to close my eyes for a good minute here and there to bring back my focus to the exam. Definitely have to take more breaks or focusing will be a hassle!

Scoliosis Rant Day 2/365

Was doing practice questions for a bit and literally had these weird spasms in my left shoulder after when I was vacuuming my room (did back and shoulder day at the gym yesterday).

Rant day 1/365

After doing hyperextensions today (3x28) at the gym, I felt this achy pain in my lower back for a bit, which is why I don’t like doing them among other exercises/certain moves. Then I had to sit for the rest of the day to study which obviously doesn’t help the pain🙃

Top 3 exercises by my PT

I recently found that the exercises I was doing at the gym given by my PT from 5 years ago was no longer helping me, so I decided to ask my PT friend for advice. Here are the top 3 scoliosis exercises she recommended:

  1. Row on the convex side (thoracic curve)

  2. Side crunches laying on concave side (lumbar curve)

  3. Side plank on convex side (lumbar curve)

What has your experience been?
