Backyard rehab: grass??

Looking for a golf course superintendent or another person that works with grass, sod, and soil. Bonus if you’re a landscape architect:

We want to keep the trees but all ground cover, grass, weeds, and wood chips would be gutted. Do I try to plant grass seed as a first timer (clay soil, not flood zone but very close, mostly shaded), or can I lay sod? Is there anything about the trees that would impact either way? Do I just need to give it some love and get the weeds?

Help! Someone killed the cedar shake!

First time homeowner, 1500 sf. About 1000 sf is cedar shake siding.

Built in 1929, with cedar shake siding that has been deformed and abused. This is in western Michigan where winters are harsh and summers are hot and muggy. 1) is the cedar painted *and* stained? 2) from the portions you can see, what is the condition of the cedar? 3) should I start over (and cry) and replace with new? 4) got any unique ideas or practical suggestions that do not involve removing them?

Am I SOL?

Any advice or personal experiences are helpful. I’m already researching YouTube, talking to our city Historian, and learning about residential building code. Thank you!

Dutch Colonial home - cedar shake

First time homeowner of a century-old 1200 sq. ft. house. The portion of cedar shake is approx 800 sq. ft.

We just bought a home built in 1929, with green cedar shake siding. This is in western Michigan where winters are harsh and summers are hot and muggy. 1) is the cedar painted *and* stained? 2) from the portions you can see, what is the condition of the cedar? 3) what is a ballpark range of cost to strip/scrape and restain or restore?
