How do I give context/exposition in an effective way?
In my story there’s two characters who served in the military as young men, there was a third friend, that third friend gets killed because one of them (Alvin) is selfish and leaves the guy alone and he gets killed. The other guy (James) finds the dead friend and sees that Alvin had left him alone and now blames Alvin for his death. Then a few years later both are in a team (superhero) and James still holds resentment towards Alvin and bosses him more than anyone, treating him like a liability.
But I want it so we first see him bossing him around to make people wonder why he’s so hard on him. But how do I tell the audience the backstory? Incrementally? Or dump it out when maybe there’s a big breakdown and it all comes out.
Thanks, hope you guys can help me!
