Surprise! The Muse 2 and Muse 2 Pro are officially coming to America!

I woke up today thinking it was just going to be a another Friday, but it turns out the universe (or rather the product pipeline) apparently had other plans. I am beyond excited to share the news that the Muse 2 and the brand-new Muse 2 Pro are officially making their way to the US market! We think it is a wonderful surprise and are so happy to finally share it with you.

Everyone at XTRA is a big fan of how compact gimbal technology can help creators capture their world, so seeing these new models arrive is a huge deal for us. We are especially interested in seeing what the Pro version has to offer and how its rumored dual-lens system and high-speed recording will help our community reach their goals.

XTRA's tech team say they’re building the MUSE 2 and MUSE 2 Pro based on what they learned from the original version. Instead of just adding bells and whistles, they’re focusing on refining the experience—basically making it easier for creators to film and share their daily lives without any friction.

From the brief: “Creators want tools that feel natural, reliable, and ready when the moment is there,” said their head of Marketing. “The MUSE 2 and MUSE 2 PRO are being built with that reality in mind.”

XTRA is still playing it pretty close to the chest with the full specs, but they’ve made it clear they aren't just guessing. They’re building these cameras to actually fit into a creator's real-world workflow. They want to bridge the gap with smarter hardware and software tweaks that make sense for how people actually use their cameras every day, rather than just adding features for the sake of it.

Since we are learned about this announcement at about the same time you are, we would love to hear what you think? Please tell us which features you are hoping to see in these new Muse models. We are curious if there are specific updates like better low-light performance or new cinematic modes you have been waiting for. We look forward to reading your thoughts and chatting more about this release!

Hands-Free Memories: Why Wearable Cameras are a Game Changer for Friends and Family

With the pace of daily life, it can be all too easy to miss family memories when they happen in the quiet spaces between planned events. While traditional photography often requires someone to step behind a lens, discreet wearable cameras like the XTRA Atto are changing how we record and enjoy moments. By shifting the focus from posing for a camera to simply living through an experience, these compact devices allow parents and caregivers to document the unscripted joy of family life without a bulky DSLR.

Here are a few anecdotes that show how this technology can help capture the essence of family life and travel:

  • The Sunday Morning Routine: Record every flour-dusted high-five and pancake flip from a parent's eye level. This hands-free approach keeps you fully present in the kitchen chaos while turning a routine meal into a lasting family memory.
  • Nature Trail Adventures: Capture looks of wonder among redwoods without the hazard of holding a phone on uneven terrain. The built-in stabilization of th Atto ensures smooth, immersive footage of the climb while leaving your hands free for balance and safety.
  • The Energy of Travel: Navigate busy airports and markets with ease while documenting every milestone, from finding the right platform to a first landmark sighting. Most wearable cameras feature discreet designs that capture authentic, unposed reactions as your family explores new worlds.

Now it’s easy enough to turn on your camera while you’re spending time with friends and family. But the real question is how do you take that raw footage and make sure you’re recording something worth watching later? While there are a litany of camera techniques and tips and tricks we could spell out for you to use, the best advice is advice you will actually use. So we’re going to take a second and lay out some basic photo tricks. Give these a shot the next time you want to try and record memorable family moments.

  • Master Smooth Body Panning: Avoid sudden, jarring turns by rotating your entire torso in a slow, fluid motion rather than pivoting your head. This movement mimics professional cinematic pans and allows the camera's stabilization to produce much smoother, watchable footage.
  • Lower Your Perspective: Drop down to a child’s eye level by kneeling or crouching during interactions. Capturing the world from their height creates a more intimate, immersive point of view and ensures you record clearer facial expressions and more direct eye contact.
  • Manage Your Framing Zones: Keep the primary action between three and six feet away to avoid wide-angle lens distortion. Additionally, position yourself with the sun at your back or side to ensure your subjects stay well-lit and the camera sensor isn't overwhelmed by harsh backlight.

In the end, the best part of any family trip isn't the gadgets you bring, but the stories you keep. Using a wearable camera lets you stop worrying about your phone and start enjoying the moment, so you can save every memory without missing out on the fun.

Now, we want to hear from you! What is one of your favorite family memories? How did you capture it? Tell us your stories in the comments below!

What is your favorite camera you've ever shot with?

There are so many posts asking for recommendations of the best and newest models. I want to know something different.

What is your favorite camera you've ever shot with?

In all your time as a videographer or photographer, what is your favorite camera you've ever worked with? Maybe it worked really well. Maybe it worked the way you wanted at the right time. Maybe it wasn't about quality, but about how long it you had, or what you shot with it? I want to know which camera (action or otherwise) made you fall in love with this kind of art?

My Rebel T3i was archaic when I got it, but I have filmed student projects, shot senior portraits for friends, and captured protests in action with that little guy. So which lightbox holds the key to your heart?

Capture the Bloom: A beginner’s guide to cherry blossom photography

Capturing the "pink snow" of cherry blossom season (Sakura) is a rite of passage for nature photographers. The right angle, the right moment, the right tree, and you can capture such a moment of serenity. However, between the unpredictable lighting and the sheer crowds, it can be trickier than it looks.

This is a beginner-friendly guide to help you make the most of the bloom. Let me know what you all think, I’m going to try and make posts for specific bits of photography like this moving forward. While I'm writing this guide with action cameras like the XTRA Muse in mind, these tips and tricks should work for most cameras.

Light and Timing are Key

Cherry blossoms are delicate and highly reflective. The wrong light can make them look washed out or gray. Aim for the hour after sunrise or the hour before sunset. The warm, directional light adds texture to the petals and a soft glow to the trees. (For those discovering the concept of “the golden hour,” for the first time, this timing provides great lighting for portraits of people too).

That being said, don’t put the camera away if it’s cloudy. Overcast is your friend! A gray sky acts like a giant diffuser, eliminating harsh shadows and making the pink tones pop against the muted background.

When it comes to the XTRA Muse, I've found that there are simple setting changes that make the cherry blossoms really pop. Your white balance for instance, should be 4800-5200 depending on the intensity of the light, while it's best to use a low ISO (100–200) on bright, sunny days to capture vibrant colors without noise. On cloudy days, increase the ISO (400–800) to compensate for lower light. For nighttime shooting, use ISO 1600 or higher to maintain clarity (when using a traditional DSLR, pair this with a wide aperture f/2 or f/2.8).

Experiment with Framing Techniques

Don’t just point and shoot at a sea of pink. Give your photo a "hero." Zooming in on a single cluster of flowers is a great way to pick a focus within the tree itself. Use a wide aperture (low like f/1.8 or f/2.8) to blur the background as well, allowing the focal point to command the photo..

The darker, gnarled branches of the tree are also a perfect tool to "frame" a specific subject, like a distant pagoda, a bridge, or a person. Particularly if you are using the XTRA Muse, you have a massive 108 degree field of view. Use this to your advantage by standing directly under a tree and shooting straight up. This creates a canopy effect where the branches appear to wrap around the edges of the frame, drawing the viewer’s eye toward the center of the sky. If the sky is blue, the contrast with the pink petals will be stunning.

To get the most out of your XTRA Muse, focus on leveraging its high-grade optics to create a sense of depth among the delicate blooms. Start by using a wide aperture to blur the background and create a bokeh effect, which allows a single cluster of cherry blossoms to pop against a soft, pink-hued background. By positioning the lens slightly behind a low-hanging branch, you can also create a layered composition by literally framing the edges of your photo.

Some Final Quick Tips

  • Check the Ground: Some of the best shots are of fallen petals floating in a pond or carpeting a sidewalk.
  • Watch the Wind: Even a light breeze can cause motion blur. If it's windy, increase your shutter speed to at least 1/500th of a second.
  • Be Respectful: Never shake a branch to make petals fall or pull a branch down for a selfie. It damages the tree and is considered poor etiquette in most cultures.

Are you planning to shoot with a dedicated camera or are you sticking to a smartphone for this trip? If you want to split the middle, an action camera like the XTRA Muse will take fantastic shots of the blossoms and also allow you to capture some breathtaking slow motion shot

Mastering Manual Control: The Professional Festival Photography Guide for XTRA Muse and XTRA ATTO

I’ve been seeing a lot of posts recently asking how to get the most out of their XTRA Muse, Atto, and 360 units. People complaining about blurry photos, coloring issues, and rough lighting. With festival season officially here (shoutout to Sabrina Carpenter and her pop-up pit stop on the way to Indio) I figured it may be a good idea to write up a little guide of my festival photography best practices. Why? Well let me tell you.

At a festival, your photo settings act as the bridge between a blurry, blown-out mess and a professional-grade memory; without manual control over variables like Shutter Speed and ISO, the camera's sensor will often struggle to reconcile a blinding stage with a dark crowd. Dialing in your settings allows you to intentionally freeze a high-energy jump, capture the vibrant trails of a light show, or preserve the rich colors of a sunset set without the digital noise that plagues "Auto" mode.

Ultimately, the right configuration ensures that the energy you feel on the ground is accurately reflected in the pixels you take home. Here is a breakdown of the settings I’ve found work best:

Video & Color (Cinematic vs. Home Video)

  • Resolution/Frame Rate: 4K video at 60 frames per second is the sweet spot you’re looking for. 60fps gives you the flexibility to slow things down in post for panning crowd shots without losing the detail of 4K video.
  • Color Capture: X-Log 10-bit Mode. Look for the Color or Look tab. You will see options like Normal, Vivid, and X-Log. Once you select X-Log, a secondary toggle for 10-bit will appear. Tap it to enable. This captures a massive dynamic range, meaning you won’t lose the details in the stage lights or the shadows of the crowd.
  • AI Face Retouch: Keep this on Low/Natural. Festivals are dusty and sweaty; this helps smooth skin tones in real-time without making you look like a character from uncanny valley.

But Wait! What is X-Log 10-Bit Mode?

X-Log and 1-Bit are separate features on your camera. X-Log flattens the image, making it look grey, washed out, and dull. This flat profile preserves a much higher dynamic range, allowing you to recover details in a bright sky or a dark corner during post-production. So while Log describes the shape of the data, 10-bit describes the depth of the data. Most consumer video is 8-bit. In 8-bit, each color channel (Red, Green, Blue) has 256 levels of brightness. In 10-bit, that jumps to 1,024 levels per channel, allowing significantly more color control on your photos in post.

“Lighting” in a Bottle (Low Light & Night Sets )

  • ISO Limit: Set your Max ISO to 3200 or 6400. The XTRA MUSE’S 1-inch sensor is a beast, but pushing past 6400 will start to introduce digital noise (grain) that’s hard to fix.
  • Shutter Speed: If you’re shooting manually, try to stay at 1/120 (for 60fps).. If it’s too dark, the XTRA Muse has a "Night Lapse" mode that handles exposure transitions automatically.
  • Metering: To use Spot Metering, tap on the EV (Exposure Value) or ISO section of settings Look for a small icon that looks like a rectangle with a dot or circle inside it. This is your Metering menu. From here select Spot Metering. Stage lights are incredibly bright compared to the dark crowd. Spot metering ensures the artist’s face isn't a blown-out white blob

XTRA Camera-Specific Hacks:

  • XTRA Atto: Turn on 5-Minute Pre-Recording. You can leave the camera "watching" and only hit record after something cool happens—it’ll save the previous 5 minutes. Total life-saver for surprise guest appearances.
  • XTRA 360: Use the Invisible Selfie Stick. Hold it high above the crowd to get "fake drone" shots. Since it has a 1/1.1-inch sensor, it actually holds up surprisingly well during night sets compared to older 360 cams.
  • XTRA Muse: Use AI Smart Tracking. If you’re vlogging while walking between stages, double-tap your face on the screen to lock the gimbal onto you.

Don't let "Auto" mode flatten the best weekend of your summer—dial in those settings before the first set starts, then put the screen away and enjoy the music. See you guys at the main stage!
