Should I buy a plated first before committing to real gold

Need suggestion. I am eyeing this Cartier necklace and kinda on the fence because the last time I bought one the pendant was too small for me and ended up giving it to the wife. My question is should I test the waters first and buy a plated on before committing to a real one. Plus its a big commitment price wise.
