How do I properly groom a double coated pup?

Hi, this is my first pup. He’s a 12 week old rough collie. I’ve been using the wrong brush since day one (smh). I started noticing mats yesterday, so I figured out what I needed. I got the slicker brush and comb.

I spent maybe 5-10 minutes brushing his coat, attempting the line brush technique. The only way I can is if he’s occupied licking PB, otherwise he wants to eat the brush.

I got a mountain of fur but there’s still so many areas that need brushed. I called it quits for the day because I can’t overdo it on the PB lol. I don’t mind putting the work in but I need to know how exactly to go about this.

Any tips or suggestions you have I will GREATLY appreciate, thank you!!

How do I properly brush his coat?

I’ve had Copper 3 weeks — he’s a 12 week rough collie. I also have a very loud parrot, but Copper is already used to the squawking and mostly ignores it. I live in an apartment with an open floor plan except for a small hallway leading to the bedroom, where he currently naps with the door shut.

I’m considering moving his crate into the den, where the bird’s cage is. The den doesn’t have a door, just a curtain separating it from the living room. I’m not worried about nighttime since my bird is quiet from around 8 PM until morning, but during the day he can be very noisy. Copper can already hear him clearly from the bedroom, though obviously being in the same room is different. His crate would be covered to reduce visual stimulation.

The den would also have more general household noise — TV, kitchen sounds, me walking around, etc. I do have a fan running that helps block some noise, but not the bird.

My bird spends a lot of time out of his cage, so he’s usually quiet when he’s out. But if I’m not home or need time to myself, he’ll either be singing (or screaming) in his cage.

I know no one can say for sure until I try it, but is it realistic for a puppy to learn to nap through that level of noise?

One thing I’ve had a question about is that I see pictures of collies with various coat lengths (I am not referencing smooth collies).

I know their fur gets very long and they have multiple coats, but I was curious why there are some roughs that have different lengths. Do people ask their groomers to shorten it down?

I thought these types of breeds were not supposed to be cut?

I attached some pictures of what I mean.

Hi. I’ve had my rough collie puppy for a little over a week. He’s 11 weeks old now.

Completed: Name, sit, crate training, house training (not 100% but going great), “ah ah” (80% success rate)

WIP: Impulse control (with meals), lay down, drop, ignoring leash, nipping
(I would love to hear how you worked on these with your pup)

He’s a very good puppy! I haven’t had issues but I am very new at this. I would like to start leash training but for now he just has his attached and drags it around to desensitize him. He chews it frequently.

I specifically need help with:
Puppy nipping, luring (he lunges at the treat more than follow), calmer when accepting treat, leash training, drop, stay

Any other tips and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
