Nicaragua's dedollarization is working — zero slippage, 34.5% cordoba deposits

Goal of this policy is to "strengthening of the córdoba in daily transactions and the reduction of financial dollarization in the economy,"

"He also pointed out that domestic inflation remained close to its medium-term fundamentals, which allowed the inflationary floor to fall and protect the purchasing power of the population, favoring a greater demand for córdobas for daily transactions."
Low inflation is important because economists generally point to tethering a country’s currency to a Western currency (the dollar in this case, but the euro in others), one of the benefits of which is low inflation.

English translation
The decision to set the exchange rate by zero percent from 2024 — and maintain it during 2025 — has turned out to be one of the most successful measures to strengthen

The strengthening of the córdoba in daily transactions and the reduction of financial dollarization in the economy, are positive results that the action of the Government has left to fix in rate 0, the exchange rate of the national moderate, stressed the Central Bank of Nicaragua (BCN), in its Annual Report 2025.

Although such a measure was approved in August 2023, the financial institution opted since 2019, reducing the percentage of the depreciation of the córdoba. In that year it fell from 5% to 3%, then to 2% in 2020 and 1% in February 2023, to reach 0%.

This eliminated the depreciation of the exchange rate and generated greater exchange rate predictability in a context of solid macro-financial stability, the NCB said.

Its positive result, the entity explained, is that by gradually softening the expected depreciation, the incentives to dollarize portfolios were reduced and the mechanisms of indexing prices to the dollar that had contributed to maintaining high dollarization were weakened.

He also pointed out that domestic inflation remained close to its medium-term fundamentals, which allowed the inflationary floor to fall and protect the purchasing power of the population, favoring a greater demand for córdobas for daily transactions.

Another example was the provision of November 2024 – in force since January 1, 2025 – that forces to express and liquidate in córdobas all prices, taxes, salaries and card payments within the national territory, backed by Law No. 1232.

This is in addition to the fact that, since 2023, the NCB implemented a differentiated interest rate policy that makes monetary instruments in córdobas, especially the NCB Letters more attractive, even during the gradual rate drop process started in March 2024.

Other obvious results, is that at the end of 2025, deposits in córdobas accounted for 34.5% of the total deposits of the financial system, equivalent to 275.238.4 million córdobas, representing an increase of 5 Percentage Points from the end of 2019.

Americans will still look at this and get angry not understanding that protests are only affective if it’s harmful to the flow of capitalism and an inconvenience to the government. If you’re peacefully protesting the way your government wants you to protest then you’re doing it wrong.
