For context, I (22F) live with my roommate, Kayla (23F). We are not close friends, but we’ve managed to live together peacefully until recently. Kayla often throws small parties on weekday nights even though our lease clearly says no excessive noise after 10PM. I have let it slide because I did not want conflict.
Last week, she had people over again. The music was not extremely loud but it was noticeable. A neighbor complained, and the landlord texted me asking if I knew what was going on because Kayla was not responding. I said I was not sure but mentioned she had guests over.
The next morning, Kayla received a warning email. Instead of taking responsibility, she blamed me. She told the landlord that I always have friends over, that I probably invited people that night, and that she was asleep.
The landlord forwarded the entire conversation to both of us. I replied calmly, “I was in my room studying. Please check the doorbell camera footage for clarity.” The footage clearly shows her friends arriving.
She did not respond after that.
Two days ago, she panicked because she forgot to submit a joint maintenance request for a broken AC unit, which was actually damaged by her boyfriend messing with the wiring. There was a surprise inspection coming, and she needed it filed to avoid being held responsible.
She asked me to tell the landlord that it was my idea to tamper with the AC controls so her boyfriend would not get blamed.
I said no.
I told her, calmly and politely, “I am not comfortable lying, especially after what happened last time.”
She got angry and said I was being petty, that roommates should help each other, and that I should stop holding grudges.
I replied, “I am not holding a grudge. I am just not taking responsibility for something I did not do.”
Now she has been upset and telling others I threw her under the bus. Very Immature.
My sister says I did nothing wrong. My mom thinks I should have helped to keep the peace.
But I feel like I was asked to lie to cover for something I had no part in, especially after she tried to blame me first.
Am I wrong for refusing to lie for her? Now, I feel like we're about to be kicked out of this apartment because of her doing.
