Im just sitting here feeling pretty down about everything and thought id reach out to see if anyone has any ideas because im running out of time and options.
So basically im about 6 weeks into my tutorship phase after finishing immersion. I started off proper motivated and keen to learn but its been a complete mess so far. Ive only actually been out on proper response or patrol with my actual tutor like 3 times in total. Every other shift theyve just paired me up with whoever is on from my team and it turns out im on what a lot of people call the worst team in the station. They barely go out on the streets, most of the shift is spent in the nick on the computer or just waiting around. So im not really getting any proper experience at all.
I tried speaking up about it pretty early on. Went to the SDU sgt after a couple of weeks and explained i wasnt getting any tutor time and asked if there was any chance of changing it. Nothing really came of it. Then i tried the inspector too. Still nothing. Eventually i contacted the federation rep because i was getting worried about falling behind. They had a chat with the sgt and inspector but i wasnt part of the meeting or anything. They just told me afterwards that everyone seemed happy with how things are going. That was basically it.
Its doing my head in because my girlfriend is on a different team thats a lot more proactive. Shes out nearly every shift with her tutor, already got a couple of arrests and is smashing her portfolio. When i talk to the other lads and lasses who joined at the same time as me theyre all getting loads of time out with their tutors and building experience properly. Makes me feel like ive just been really unlucky with how ive been placed.
Anyway ive now only got two weeks left to get the rest of my portfolio done and im only on about 20%. Its looking really tight and im starting to panic that im not going to make it to independence in time. I know these things can be tough for everyone but i do feel like ive been at a massive disadvantage from pretty much day one through no fault of my own.
Has anyone else been in a similar situation during their probation or tutorship? Did you manage to get it sorted or turn it around? Is there anyone else i should try speaking to like higher up in training or someone without it backfiring on me? Or am i basically stuffed at this point?
Sorry for the long post but any advice would mean a lot right now. Thanks if you read all this.

Hi everyone,
Throwaway for obvious reasons. I’m 6 weeks into my tutorship as a new PC and I’m genuinely worried I’m about to fail/be sacked. I’m reaching out here because I feel like I’ve been dealt a really poor hand from the start and I don’t know what else to do.
The situation:
• I’ve only been out on the streets 3 times with my actual tutor. The rest of the time I’ve been paired up with random officers from my team.
• My team is apparently the worst performing team in the whole station. They spend the vast majority of shifts in the nick, not out dealing with jobs. So I’m getting almost no meaningful experience.
• I’ve barely seen my tutor since immersion finished. I went to the SDU Sgt early on to ask to be moved to someone else and nothing happened. Spoke to the SDU Inspector as well – still nothing.
• I contacted the Federation. They had a meeting with the Sgt and Inspector without me present and came back saying everyone was “quite happy” with the situation.
Meanwhile my girlfriend is on a different proactive team and is out most shifts with her tutor, already has a few arrests under her belt. Other people I speak to from my cohort are out daily getting proper experience with their tutors.
I only have 2 weeks left to finish my portfolio and I’m sitting at around 20% complete. Independence feels miles away because I’m not actually getting the exposure I need.
I’m not asking to be spoon-fed or anything – I just want a fair chance to learn the job. Has anyone been in a similar position? Is there anything else I can realistically do at this stage? Should I be escalating higher (e.g. Chief Inspector, Professional Standards, etc.) or is that career suicide? Any advice on how to salvage this would be massively appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
