Losing my dad to Cirrhosis

My dad's been intubated in the ICU for 8 days. We plan to move him to hospice care tomorrow. It's been awful. I'm not really sure why I'm posting this; I'm extremely sad and even more sad for my mom. It doesn't seem real, he was just diagnosed in March and this moved so fast. Anyways, thanks for reading.

My grandfather gifted my kids (4yo twins) a couple buckets of change. I haven't counted it yet, but I believe he mentioned it being close to $600 for each kid. But again, not sure the exact amount. I'd like to invest it for the kids, but I'm looking for the best way to do so. I know about 529 plans, my wife isn't interested (I'm hoping I understood her concerns properly to convey here) because she doesn't want to lose out on that money for them if they decide not to go to college or something. Maybe they want to start a small business or something instead. Anyways. Is a 529 the best way to go, pros and cons? Should I go a different route? All I know is I shouldn't just leave it sitting there.
