Help me understand some of the clean wiring I've seen on here/elsewhere

When I see images of networks wired with thin, color coordinated wires to switches, etc. are these wires connected to an RJ45 coupler for aesthetic reasons or do folks actually pull these thin wires throughout the building?

In my house, over the years, I've got three colors of hard sheathed CAT7 pulled all over/under my house so if I wanted to have clean, matching colored wiring on the front of my server rack, I think I'd need to use couplers and then run the matching wires to the switches, etc. as there is no way I am re-pulling/crimping the long house runs...

Help clarifying some hardware connectivity...

I've read the recommendations here: Which 10Gb SFP+ Module Should You Choose?

Unfortunately, I am a little confused on the right connector. I am trying to connect the following:

  • UNAS-Pro to USW Flex 2.5Gbe
  • 16 Port PoE Switch (US-16-POE-150W) to Gateway Max (UXG-MAX)

The UNAS-Pro and the US-16-POE-150W both have SFP+ connectors so I was thinking I could use those to connect to 2.5GbE on the other devices to maximize throughput. If that is the recommended approach, can I use any SFP+ to RJ45 adapter? I see the prices all over the place. The Unifi connector (UACC-CM-RJ45-MG) is $65 but I can buy a pair of generic connectors off Amazon for $48. I'm sure there are some quality differences I need to be aware of but I am not sure what to look for that might help me understand which one is right. Thanks.

Looking for some guidance on a simple network config…

Hey all,

I am in the early stages of re-doing my small home network and can use some advice and guidance. I am in the process of of consolidating my hardware to a 12U rack and am looking for feedback on the right networking layout for the below. I was considering buying a new UDM-Pro but it does not have multiple 2.5GbE ports so I'll wait until the next iteration. I'd like to eke out as much performance for my LAN as possible with my current hardware. I am absolutely open to buying some hardware if it should make the performance and functionality better.

CURRENT HARDWARE LAYOUT IDEAS

UCI Cable Internet

- Gateway Max UGX-MAX (4 x 2.5 GbE)

- - PC (w/ Unifi controller) : 2.5 GbE to 2.5 GbE

- - Mac Mini : 2.5 GbE to 2.5 GbE

- - UNAS-Pro : 10G SFP+ to 2.5Gbe via UACC-CM-RJ45-MG

- - USW Flex 2.5Gbe (8 x 2.5 GbE) : 2.5 GbE to 2.5 GbE

- - - U7 Pro : 2.5 GbE to 2.5 GbE w/ PoE

- - - U7 Pro : 2.5 GbE to 2.5 GbE w/ PoE

- - - U7 Pro : 2.5 GbE to 2.5 GbE w/ PoE

- - - Arlo Base Station : 10/100Mb to 2.5GbE // security cameras to be replaced later on with Unifi Security products…I just need to run the wire

- - - Xbox Series X : 1GbE to 2.5 GbE

- - - US-8 : 1GbE to 2.5 GbE // just a TV, receiver, and AppleTV

Or

UCI Cable Internet

- Gateway Max UGX-MAX (4 x 2.5 GbE)

- - U7 Pro : 2.5 GbE to 2.5 GbE w/ PoE

- - U7 Pro : 2.5 GbE to 2.5 GbE w/ PoE

- - U7 Pro : 2.5 GbE to 2.5 GbE w/ PoE

- - USW Flex 2.5Gbe (8 x 2.5 GbE) : 2.5 GbE to 2.5 GbE

- - - PC (w/ Unifi controller) : 2.5 GbE to 2.5 GbE

- - - Mac Mini : 2.5 GbE to 2.5 GbE

- - - Arlo Base Station : 10/100Mb to 2.5GbE

- - - Xbox Series X : 1GbE to 2.5 GbE

- - - US-8 : 1GbE to 2.5 GbE

The vast majority of our client devices are WiFi but the ones that have the most data transferred are the Mac Mini, PC, UNAS, and Xbox. Everything else pales in comparison.

I also have a bunch of other hardware that I could use if it would make long-term sense… just not sure any of it is needed (US-16-POE-150, US-24, 3xU6-PRO, CloudKey Gen1, a couple edge switches...). These are just in storage at the moment.

I am very open to thoughts and feedback. I'm just looking to optimize LAN performance without buying a ton of new hardware...but if one or two new pieces would make a significant difference, please let me know. Thanks.

What is the right process for downsizing my NAS...?

Technically-speaking, I am migrating my data but I need to reclaim some of the hard drives prior to doing so. Here pic of my setup.

https://preview.redd.it/uwblvpuc31ug1.png?width=695&format=png&auto=webp&s=1bf8fb5da8eeefec06ed8d7599d5502011991499

I need to reclaim the three 12TB drives for my new NAS. I have a lot of 3-4TB drives from older upgrades but I'm not quite sure if I can use any of them as they are smaller than my current smallest drive (6TB). I can buy 2 more 12TB drives to get my new NAS up and running (will be RAID 5, so 10.9TB available) but won't have enough space to fully migrate all the data until I move the three WD 12TB drives over. Current storage in use is 36.7TB out of 61TB. I'm using SHR with 1-drive fault tolerance.

Do folks have any ideas on what process I can do to migrate the data given that I need the three 12TB drives in the new NAS?
