[5010 Fifty Fathoms] Some shots of my new summer daily

Replaced the 124060 Submariner and giving my 116 Daytona a run for its money as a daily.

Would skip the bracelet. Feels pretty bloated on the wrist and no microadjust is extra inconvenient because you need special tools to adjust any of the links properly that apparently only the ADs have. Also the butterfly clasp kept getting stuck in the gaps between the links whenever I took the watch off. Diver bracelet shouldn’t have butterfly clasp to begin with.

Tropic rubber strap is excellent. Great texture details and really light and comfortable on the wrist. Hated the Omega OEM strap for my white Speedy and Rubber B on my Sub. This is way better.

Watch wears way smaller than 42mm but it’s a thick boy. Also not forget-you’re-wearing-it light like the RLX Yachtmaster or Pelagos 39. Has some weight to it because of the movement and all the sapphire on dial, caseback and bezel.

That the Omega Seamaster is screwed. Kidding aside, I’ve owned and sold the Rolex Submariner and just bought the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. Have also considered various Omegas and Tudors over the years. The bezel action this thing is the closest experience I’ve had to the Submariner which IMO has the best action in the market. Also the dial and case proportions are fantastic.

Cannot believe this is under $3K with all these color and size options. Amazing value and they look great.

Big fan of the bracelet but waiting for the OEM strap

so I have options. Super happy with the purchase. Have had my eyes on this since they got released and found myself constantly coming back to it.

I had very high hopes for the Sub when I bought it. And I do think it deserves the reputation for a potential one collection piece. It’s beautiful, simple and robust. Also goes well with any outfit.

I suspect I would have enjoyed it a lot more if I had bought it earlier in my collecting journey. But I had already gotten used to daily-ing a 116 Panda Daytona when I bought the Sub. On my 6.5 inch wrist, the Panda dimensions and case were just far more comfortable as a daily. And I already have gold dress watches for formal occasions.

The only wear occasion slot left for the Sub to fill was the active-travel-vacation role. And the Sub’s case just didn’t do it any favors on this front. It’s basically a straight flat-sided steel slab with sharp edges and a protruding caseback. While this design has the benefit of hiding its visual thickness, it made it far more uncomfortable on my wrist no matter how I adjusted the glidelock.

Oh and the glidelock. The clasp was comically long and added to the discomfort. I tried traveling with it on the oyster bracelet and again on rubber strap and I couldn’t stop noticing how uncomfortable it was. The last sensation I want on my wrist when weaving through the airport with kids and juggling luggage.

Think a titanium Sub or maybe a pre-super case reference would have been perfect but oh well. As a testament to the value retention, I was able to sell for what I paid for it (bought grey) so basically got to try it for free.

Still wanted to have a diver in my collection so narrowed the list down to titanium or ceramic options and ultimately landed on the 5010 Fifty Fathoms, which I had been eyeing for years anyway.

My second choice was the Tudor P39 but the FF just felt more special and I wanted to venture away from the Rolex family. Debated waiting for the new GS Ushio 300 in 40mm but I checked out the existing GS diver in 45mm and realized I just didn’t like the look of these.

Have finally decided that I must have the blue titanium Fifty. Settled on the 42mm even though 6.5 inch wrist. Only question left is whether to get on the bracelet or stick to OEM rubber, which was surprisingly comfortable. Feel like I see more of these on a strap. Interested to hear how comfortable the bracelet is or isn’t over time and seasons.

FWIW I don’t think I’d care about no micro adjust. I don’t like wearing my watches tight and this piece is so light that I don’t think it would bother me if it was a little loose. I have the Submariner that obviously has the glidelock but that hasn’t helped overcome its top heavy/slabby character in terms of comfort.
