Reminder Pooler City Council Meeting Tonight @6:00 pm

Even if you don't speak, it makes a HUGE difference when the room is packed!

In spite of what some people claim, property rights are NOT absolute. No "RIGHT" is. The government is allowed to restrict ANY Right based on a compelling interest.

Also, to address the NIMBYISM argument: People are allowed to want to live in an area that isn't over developed.

NIMBYISM assumes that the same people against development in their town are somehow clamoring for development elsewhere.

Someone saying no apartments in my backyard aren't asking for apartments to be built elsewhere.

Social justice issues, such as protecting the environment, may clash with other social justice issues such as more housing. That is just the way it is.

We can't all fight for the same issues.

And speaking of which, the housing crisis isn't "just" about the lack of available units.

It is more nuanced and complex than that. Two of the biggest factors are affordability and the "right" kind of housing.

People STILL WANT TO OWN A HOUSE. The issue is that there aren't enough "starter" or "retirement" homes on the market.

PEOPLE CAN'T afford to buy homes and renting is also difficult for a lot of people.

Building dense housing such as apartments or rental duplexes does not solve affordability and desired type of housing.

Hope to see lots of you tonight!

Please fight for the Ogeechee Canal and Tom Triplett on April 6 Pooler City Council Meeting

There will be two zoning issues coming before Pooler City Council on Monday April 6 at 6:00 pm.

  1. The first is one that many people showed up for on March 2. The owners of the former Oglethorpe Motor Speedway want to build THREE LARGE WAREHOUSES BEHIND TOM TRIPLETT PARK.

A decision was postponed last time, only because a resident brought up a legal issue and the developers lied about serving Chatham County.

Because they did not have proof, there will be another public hearing.

Mayor Williams and Council looked like they were going to decide in favor of the developers based on some videos circulating on FB.

  1. The second one is a property on 1400 Canal Bank Road. Most of the property is wetlands. There is a hiking trail and the Ogeechee Canal abuts the property. The Canal keepers have found historical artifacts.

The owners want to zone the property from agricultural residential to MULTIFAMILY Residential. These would be rental properties to generate income for "generational wealth" as stated in the P&Z meeting.

The issue with Pooler rezoning issues is that they DO NOT REQUIRE STUDIES at this point. There is no guarantee that what they are proposing is even feasible.

However, once the land is rezoned, Pooler does not change their minds and developers can basically have carte blanche to deforest the land.

WE NEED PEOPLE TO PACK THE ROOM!

Historically, when Mayor Williams and City Council know that the public is angry and watching, they are afraid to act in their usual nefarious matter.

Thank you!
