Question About UNC CS Pathways as a Prospective Student

Hey guys, I’m a prospective UNC student deciding between a few options.

I’m really interested in low-level stuff (OS, embedded, robotics related programming). I was looking through the course list and saw classes like COMP 541 (digital logic/computer design) and COMP 581 (robotics), which seem really interesting.

But since UNC doesn’t have an engineering school, I’m wondering if anyone has felt limited pursuing this path through CS. I also saw a few research groups that caught my eye, how hard is it to get involved in undergrad CS research?

Would appreciate hearing from anyone who’s tried going down this route. I've also been admitted into a few other engineering schools, but after touring, I like UNC's vibe the most.

Thanks

Can I change Engineering Major + more engineering questions (prospective freshman)

Hi, I was admitted to Texas A&M Engineering as an Electrical Engineering major through National Merit. I’m currently deciding between A&M and a few other options, and I have a few questions:

  1. Since I’m already admitted into EE, is it possible to switch into Computer Engineering without going through the general engineering process? Ive recently realized my end goal is still software, and CompE just aligns with that more.
  2. how hard is it to maintain a 3.5? (I need this to keep the scholarship) also are students able to balance pursuing other academic interests (e.g I enjoy stats), would I have time to pursue these classes?
  3. I’ve been looking into FSAE (motor sports) is this only for seniors or can anyone apply? can people outside of mech engineering join?

4)how hard is it to get under grad research? I noticed A&M class is HUGE.

  1. for my out of state folks, how hard was it to adapt into the a&m/ Texas system culture?

  2. It seems likeA&M has strong engineering placement. do most graduates tend to stay in Texas after graduating, or is it common to get jobs in other states as well?

any insight to any of these questions would be really appreciated
