The Sound of Madness
I’ve gone back and forth on this song. I struggle with mental health, so sometimes this song strikes a raw nerve. And it’s always felt like a weird juxtaposition against the uplifting nature of other songs. There’s a lot of sources and forum discussions that point to this song being about a toxic victim mentality and for people to recognize their own role in their circumstances and to stand up and fight back against themselves.
So then I wondered if it’s possible that the song isn’t that broad, but rather meant to be read as a very specific reflection from Brent on his past addiction. Like it’s him singing specifically to his addict self. For me it makes some things make more sense, like the anger/sarcasm in the song. But with this framework, the “bipolar” and “social disease” lines still don’t work or really make sense to me. But the “take your medicine” line makes more sense to me. It’s wouldn’t be him telling someone flippantly to take their mental health meds in this framework, it would be Brent angrily telling his past addicted self to recognize the brutal and bitter truth that they are their own worst enemy in this self destruction through alcoholism. And then “take your medicine” could also be in reference to the following lines, where he discusses the need for his addict self to recognize that he wasn’t a danger while he slept, because he himself was the danger. The gun he slept with for protection (be it literal from paranoia or a metaphor) was useless. The enemy to fight back against was already inside the house.
If you made it this far in the post, thank you for listening to me ramble out loud. I really like so much of Shinedown’s music, and this song always has just felt like a bad outlier. And I swear to god I did a ton of Google searches to see if someone had already asked this, or if it had already been like “confirmed”, but I couldn’t find anything. I’m going to be mortified if I missed something obvious.
But also feel free to tell me I’m an idiot and to move along. 🙃
Stay safe out there y’all. ✌️
