Another Magnet Warrior win on the Austrian Nationals. We have a decklist for Crystron and Ice Barrier.
In the current Genesys state, what deck would win a YCS? (Options based on Gilliam tierlist + new kid on the block, magnet warriors)
Taken from my experience on high ladder DN.
Further explanation of this tierlist can be found in my previous post!
Hey all,
I’ve been grinding GENESYS since release, with friends and online on DuelingNexus, consistently finishing top 10 (usually top 5), and rotating between decks. After the latest point changes, I wanted to give a more condensed take on the current high ladder meta along with my experience this season. I've played people with YCS tops and other high-ranked duelists.
This season (at the time of this post) I've had 19 wins and 4 losses (2× Monarch, 1× Ice Barrier, 1× Radiant Typhoon).
In past seasons I played Branded, but as you all know this deck has had very high highs and even lower lows. I switched to Dracotail after, when it was still a defining Tier 0 deck. With the latest point adjustments I switched to Darklord. This post is all based strictly on high ladder DN; if something isn’t mentioned, I’m just not seeing it often at that level.
I ranked the decks in 3 tiers:
Tier 0: Meta defining, if I encountered these decks I had to play my A-game. Favorites for big tournaments (in current state) and all have very clear strengths.
Tier 1: Very strong archetypes with the capabilities to beat any other deck. Despite their prowess, they still have clear negatives or flaws.
Tier 2: The rest of the bunch I saw at the highest level on DN. Most didn’t give much scares but good enough to get a mention. Still capable of getting a good amount of wins, but mostly outclassed and outperformed by the Tier 0 decks.
🔴 Tier 0 — Meta Defining
Monarch is still, in my opinion, the most oppressive deck to face. It doesn’t care about handtraps, doesn’t need to run them, and plays equally well going first or second. Even without Zaborg it still feels unfair. The only consistent approach I’ve found is removing the tributed monster immediately (duh). This deck is the reason I'm siding 3× Mask of Restrict, and that still isn’t reliable if you lose the dice roll or don’t draw it.
Magnet Warriors are the fast riser right now. Not super common on ladder (probably due to difficulty), but in the hands of a good player the deck is insane—layered interaction, plays through disruption, and answers like Koaki for Nib are pretty nasty. Would not be surprised to see Magnet Bonding get hit soon. But the same goes for Kewl Tune: they will be very light with point hits on this deck because of the new cards, and Konami still wants people to buy.
Kewl Tune is still Tier 0 as well. Slightly toned down, but the ceiling is still absurd and it can brute force through most boards. It’s pretty clear Konami didn’t want to kill it right away since it’s new. Right now the Herald package (with Keldo + Mudora) combined with Veiler is just too efficient. When Heralds get hit—and they will—the deck will likely just pivot into another low-pointed tuner handtrap.
Radiant Typhoon rounds out Tier 0: flexible, explosive, and punishing. Still one of the scariest decks to queue into. The hit on Vision didn’t really impact the deck itself, but it did hurt other strategies that relied on that extra draw power in quick-play spell-heavy builds. Radiant Typhoon also uses Shiina extremely well, which is a huge plus. In my loss against it, the deck felt genuinely oppressive without a clear answer. That said, it feels like it’s right at its limit point-wise; one more small hit could easily push it down a tier.
🟠 Tier 1 — Very Strong
Darklord feels extremely strong right now and is what I’m currently playing. The Herald package fits perfectly, and the new support (Eveningstar) is honestly ridiculous—double search, setting, and copying effects just generate too much value. I’d expect it to get pointed soon.
Odion is still relevant almost entirely because of Shifter. If they open it, a lot of decks just lose on the spot unless they can also play it or don’t care. Very polarizing but still strong enough for Tier 1.
Artmage has been consistently good across multiple seasons, and I’m honestly surprised it hasn’t been hit harder given how many tops it has. Didn’t face it much this season, but every time I did it was a grind. Feels like it’s only a matter of time before Konami takes it down a notch.
Dragon Ruler is another very solid pick. Being able to run Sekka’s Light is a huge advantage, and the synergy with Armed Dragon lets it play well into a lot of matchups. It only feels awkward when you don’t open any of the babies, but overall it’s very consistent. With the recent point reductions, gaining access to Zeus and Typhon is a big upgrade for dealing with different board states.
Vanquish Soul is still absurd. I genuinely don’t understand how this deck hasn’t been nerfed harder; the point adjustments don’t match how strong it still is. It plays through disruption incredibly well, has insane layered interaction, and can still run Shifter. Losing Regenesis didn’t slow it down enough, and Hollie Sue is still incredibly annoying to deal with.
Other solid Tier 1 decks include Exosister, Onomat, White Forest, and P.U.N.K., which still perform very well but were less prevalent in my matches on DN.
🟡 Tier 2 — Playable but Outclassed
Dracotail (current) belongs here now after the nerfs. It’s still playable with a heavier Shaddoll package, but noticeably less consistent and much weaker going second. If you win the dice roll and don’t brick, it can still put up strong boards, but overall it’s a clear step down from its previous Tier 0 status.
Tistina is a pretty straightforward but still valid option. It doesn’t do anything particularly special, but what it does do works—it focuses on putting out Level 10 XYZ monsters consistently. Since it’s a non-pointed archetype, you have a lot of flexibility to include strong generic disruption, board breakers, or powerful pointed XYZs, which gives it some surprising versatility.
Ice Barrier is the standout here and very underrated. When piloted correctly, it’s extremely annoying going second. Every time I face a good Ice Barrier player I have to sweat, even when I had easy answers like Secretarion in Dracotail. The deck has everything: banish tools that punish graveyard decks, spell negation, summon disruption, and layered interaction. A lot of players still don’t understand how to play it properly, but the ceiling is much higher than people think. I’ve saved replays where I literally couldn’t play. Not trying to expose all the sauce though, I don’t want more people picking it up 😉
Super Quant is much more linear; it’s essentially a one-trick tower deck. If it goes first, it usually performs fine, but going second can be rough without handtraps. Kaijus deal with it pretty cleanly though.
⭐ Honorable Mentions
Branded deserves a mention here. It’s in a weird spot, arguably one of the strongest decks in theory and probably the best version we’ve had since early GENESYS, but extremely skill-intensive with almost no margin for error. You can still perform very well with it, but you’re working much harder compared to other decks. Also seeing Herald and GEM-Knight variants that don't run Branded Fusion is very interesting.
Blue-Eyes is also worth mentioning, just because I've faced it a lot this season. I've never felt in danger playing against the deck; it still needs a point adjustment so it can abuse Veiler more.
🧠 Meta Takeaway
The biggest takeaway right now is simple: Pointed handtraps/boardbreak > pointed engine. The best decks are the ones that convert points into board breakers or handtraps and basically have a very low cost for running engine. That’s why Monarch feels so oppressive, why Magnet Warriors are rising, and why the Herald engine keeps showing up everywhere.
💬 Final Thoughts
The format is definitely more diverse now, but still clearly shaped by a few top decks. I hope KONAMI gives us more than a new cards hit with Blazing Dominion, but hits other top decks too. The Heralds feel like the next obvious target for hits.
Curious what other high ladder players think about the current GENESYS meta.
Again, this is from my experience, so let me know what you think.
