Help with my new 4th gen

I recently got a 4th gen iPod classic and when connecting it to my windows 11 laptop it shows "do not disconnect" on the screen on the iPod but it doesn't show up in iTunes, and iTunes seems to freeze.

I uninstalled iTunes and the iPod seems to occasionally show up in my files and device manager but still won't co-operate.

It is still very temperamental between when it shows up as D:, or as iPod, or at all.

The 20gb is almost completely full of all the old owners music since they forgot how to use it. Would this be contributing to it's difficulties?

I have also installed Foobar2000 with the iPod manager which has recognised it but seems to be processing each song for like 15min each

What can I do before I resort to a new hard drive?

could it be even a cable issue?
