I don't think I actually showed the whole royal family I made for my new Ultimate Decades Challenge series. This is the Plantagenet Dynasty that ruled over England for around 330 years before the Tudors took over the throne.

  1. The whole family as they were in 1300

  2. Edward 1st of England (1239-1307), nicknamed Edward Longshanks for his height and Hammer of the Scots for his conquest over Scotland. Married first wife Eleanor of Castile in 1254 and had around 16 children, but not all survived to 1300. Eleanor died in 1290 and Edward went on to marry Marguerite (Margaret) of France in 1299. They had 3 children together before he died in 1307.

  3. Marguerite of France (1279-1318) married 60-year-old Edward when she was only 20 and was a loyal wife even after his death. She got on quite well with her stepson, Edward 2nd, and was respected for her beauty, piety and virtue as a queen. Her niece wound up marrying Edward 2nd before Marguerite died of an unknown illness in 1318.

  4. Joan of Acre (1272-1307) was the eldest child of Edward and Eleanor to reach adulthood and survive to 1300. After the death of her first husband, Joan was left with 4 children and ended up falling in love with Ralph de Monthermer, her late husband's squire. She managed to get her father to knight him and they ended up having 4 more children together before she died in 1307 of an unknown ailment.

  5. Margaret of England (1275-1333) became the Duchess of Brabant after marrying Jean 2nd the Peaceful, Duke of Brabant. However, it wasn't a very peaceful marriage. She was forced to accept her husband’s mistresses and their illegitimate children, who were raised at court alongside Margaret’s only child, Jean 3rd the Triumphant. Jean 2nd ended up dying in 1312 after a prolonged illness, whereas Margaret lived to see her grandchildren be born, including Jeanne, who became Duchess of Brabant after her father and brother's deaths. Margaret died sometime in 1333 from an unknown cause, but the exact dates aren't known.

  6. Mary of Woodstock (1278-1332) became a nun at only 7 years old, much to the delight of her grandmother. She wasn't confined to the abbey, however, and often frequented court. Mary's career in the church wasn't amazing despite her high birth, but she did oversee the education and spiritual training of other aristocratic nuns. Her penchant for high living and gambling meant she was also in quite a bit of debt for a nun, despite her large income, and had to have both her father and younger brother support her financially until she died in 1332.

  7. Elizabeth of Rhuddlan (1282-1316) at the start of 1300 was recently a widow and had had no children in the 2 years she was married. She was said to have been her father's favourite, and Elizabeth was vehemently against her first marriage, as it would mean leaving England. Her second marriage to Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Hereford and Essex, in 1302, was much more successful. They had 11 children together, but unfortunately, Elizabeth died in childbirth in 1316, alongside her newborn daughter.

  8. Edward 2nd of Caenarfon (1284-1327) was the youngest child of Edward and Eleanor to survive to 1300, and was the only male heir at the time. He was the first to hold the title of Prince of Wales and started the tradition of passing the title on to the eldest son of the monarch. In 1308, he married Isabella of France (Marguerite of France's niece), and they proceeded to have 4 children together. Edward had a favourite in a man called Piers Gaveston, who was of a similar age, and it's rumoured they had more of a romantic relationship. He faced a lot of opposition as king from people who didn't think he was up to the task and those who hated his close relationship with Gaveston. Interestingly, Edward's wife and her lover, Roger Mortimer, emerged as an opposition in 1325. It ended with Edward being deposed and formally abdicating in 1327, and murdered later that year by, supposedly, having a red-hot spit thrust into his bowels!

Hope you like them and somewhat enjoyed the quick history facts!

I made the actual 1300s royal family to add to my ultimate decades challenge for realism, and I love how Edward came out. I'm using Plumbobs and the Past's rules because I really like the historical accuracy and how in-depth they get with rules, rolls and events.
