[COD] Help me pick 1–2 peak single-player offline campaigns on Steam

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for help picking one or at most two Call of Duty games to play purely for their single-player campaigns on PC, specifically on Steam.

I played Call of Duty: Ghosts before, but that was years ago and very casually. Now I want to actually play the franchise seriously and experience what people consider the peak COD campaigns, the must-play ones, or the ones that are extremely popular for single-player.

My problem is that I barely understand the franchise.

From the outside, COD just looks like a huge series of military shooters, and when I watch gameplay on YouTube, a lot of them look similar to me, mostly just shooting in different settings. Since I do not know the series well, I cannot really tell what makes one game special and another one forgettable.

I am also confused by the naming and order:

  • There is Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
  • Then Modern Warfare 2
  • Then remasters
  • Then reboots with similar names
  • And people abbreviate everything as COD4, MW, MW2, BO, etc.

So I honestly cannot tell which one is the actual original, which one is the reboot, and which version I am even supposed to buy on Steam.

From random online searching, the names that came up most often for campaigns were:

  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

But every ranking list seems to throw out a different answer, so I wanted community suggestions based on what I am specifically looking for.

What I want:

  • PC gamer
  • Steam only
  • Single-player offline campaign
  • I do not care about multiplayer
  • I want the best fun campaign, not the best competitive COD
  • I only want 1 main recommendation, or 2 max if there is a real tie
  • Good pacing, memorable missions, strong atmosphere, and overall "this is why COD became huge" kind of experience

A few extra details:

  • I already have a lot of games from other genres, like Ghost Recon Wildlands, Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell, Far Cry 3, Just Cause 3, and Hitman
  • So I am not trying to build a huge COD backlog, I just want the best representative experience
  • I am not really a zombies/apocalypse fan
  • If a COD game is still absolutely worth it because the campaign/story/gameplay is top tier, I can consider it, but zombies are definitely not a selling point for me

So based on that, which one or two COD games on Steam would you recommend for me, and why?

Also, if possible, please explain it in simple terms like:

  • which one to play first
  • whether I should get original or remastered
  • and which similarly named games I should avoid confusing with each other

Background

Some context on where I'm coming from before I get into the actual question:

  • Black Flag was my first AC game, and it really shaped my love for the entire series. It was an amazing experience that pulled me in immediately.
  • The mix of naval and ground gameplay was the key. I never got bored because I could swap between assassinating guards across islands, doing stealth missions, and then jumping into naval combat or open sea exploration whenever I wanted a change of pace.
  • Other AC games tend to have one core gameplay loop. You explore on land, do missions, eliminate targets, and that's pretty much it. Black Flag offered a real choice: be an assassin when you want, be a pirate when you want.
  • Freedom and variety are why it stuck with me. Whenever a game gives you tactical options and lets you switch between different play styles, that's when it shines. You never get stuck doing the same repetitive thing.
  • The tailing missions are actually one of my favorites, even though I know most players list them as the worst part of Black Flag. For me they pulled me out of the usual pirate or guard killing loop and made me feel like a proper assassin again. The desynchronization risk if I got spotted added real tension, and the missions practically forced me to engage with the parkour system: scouting buildings, planning rooftop routes, picking approaches through crowds to stay unseen. Instead of doing parkour casually on the side, these missions made it mandatory and tactical, which actually enhanced the gameplay for me rather than dragged it down.
  • Currently I'm playing AC3 Remastered and honestly enjoying it a lot, possibly even more than Black Flag, because the chain killing and brutal combat is incredibly immersive. The Ezio trilogy is on my list to try next.
  • I also recently picked up AC Rogue on sale, mostly because I wanted more naval gameplay and it was a great deal. More on that below.

The Question

The upcoming Black Flag Resync has me genuinely torn. Should I spend the money to buy the original game now while it's still available, or should I hold out and pick up the Resync when it drops? It sounds simple but there are a few layers to it.

Concern 1: Will the Original Disappear Forever?

This is my biggest worry. When AC3 Remastered launched, the original AC3 got pulled and is no longer sold. I'm scared the same thing will happen with Black Flag once the Resync drops.

There's also a follow up question: even if I buy the original now and it gets delisted later, will Steam still let me download and play it from my library? If Ubisoft pulls something weird and I lose access after delisting, I'd basically be flushing 40 bucks down the drain.

Concern 2: Will the Resync Just Feel Like Mirage?

From the footage I've seen so far, the Resync looks like it's borrowing a lot from AC Mirage in terms of mechanics. That makes sense from a development standpoint, since teams typically reuse and refactor existing code rather than rebuild systems from scratch. But it worries me as a player. If the Resync ends up playing like Mirage with a Black Flag skin, I'm not sure that's actually what I want.

I haven't played Mirage yet either. If the Resync is going to feel close to Mirage anyway, it might make more sense to save my money and just buy Mirage outright. I prefer variety, and since I've already played Black Flag, spending on a game I haven't experienced before sounds smarter than buying a polished version of one I already know inside out.

Concern 3: I Already Own AC Rogue

Here's where it gets messier. I love the chain killing in the Kenway saga. That's a huge part of why AC3 Remastered is hitting so hard for me right now. The brutal, immersive combat is exactly my style.

I'd been waiting on a Black Flag sale forever. It went on sale once, I missed it by literally one day, and it never came back during that window. Meanwhile Rogue dropped to a great price, has the same naval mechanics, and adds something I hadn't played to my library, so I grabbed it.

Now that Rogue is already scratching the naval itch, the case for buying original Black Flag feels weaker. The Resync is starting to look more attractive because:

  • It's more polished and built on modern mechanics
  • The story is essentially the same as the original Black Flag, so I'd still get that experience
  • It's not just a copy paste of Rogue, it's an updated version of a different game I haven't played in its newer form
  • Effectively I'd be buying Black Flag, but in upgraded form

Questions for You All

So I'd really appreciate input on these specific points:

  • If I buy the original Black Flag on Steam now and it gets delisted later, can I still download and play it from my library?
  • Is the Resync actually leaning heavily on Mirage's mechanics, or is that just paranoia from trailers?
  • Given I already own Rogue, does buying original Black Flag still make sense, or is the Resync the smarter play?
  • Anyone who's gone through the AC3 Original to Remastered transition: do you regret one choice over the other?

Any thoughts from people who've thought through similar decisions would be really helpful. Thanks!
