Is there any edge in earnings calls anymore?

Genuine question. Is there still any edge in listening to earnings calls?

I went through one recently and noticed the CEO kept repeating the same cost language and avoided giving clear guidance.

The stock sold off later, but the signal felt obvious in hindsight.

Problem is it’s buried in a long call and not easy to act on live.

Do people actually use this as part of their process or just rely on summaries and charts?

Anyone actually watch earnings calls live for trades?

Do any of you actually listen to earnings calls live or is that just not practical?

I tried it recently and there were a few moments where you could tell something was off. Like the CEO hesitating or repeating the same thing.

But it’s also 45 to 60 minutes just to catch maybe 2 or 3 useful moments.

Feels like there’s something there, but I don’t see how it’s usable in real time.

Curious if anyone here actually trades off that or just waits for price action.

How do you actually handle earnings calls in research roles?

For people doing equity research, how much time do you actually spend on earnings calls vs just reading summaries?

I’ve been digging into a few full calls recently and it’s honestly kind of wild how much is buried in them.

Like tone changes, avoiding certain questions, repeating certain phrases.

But it’s also super time consuming. Not really scalable.

Just wondering how people here approach it in practice.

Is there signal in earnings call audio beyond transcripts?

Has anyone here looked into extracting signals from earnings call audio instead of transcripts?

I’m not talking about sentiment scores, more like patterns in how people speak. Repeated phrases, deflection, stuff like that.

Feels like a lot of signal gets flattened once everything becomes text.

Curious if anyone’s explored this or if it’s not worth the effort.

How much do you factor tone and delivery into earnings calls?

Do you guys actually listen to earnings calls or mostly stick to transcripts?

I’ve started listening to a few more lately and noticed things that don’t really show up in text. Like hesitation or repeated phrasing.

Example. One CEO kept emphasizing “cost control” but avoided anything about growth. Felt like a red flag in hindsight.

Just wondering if people here factor that kind of stuff in or if I’m overthinking it.
