Hi everyone! I’m currently building a digital archive to document the 'material culture' of the Chinese diaspora—specifically focusing on the traditional Rooster Bowl. I want to make sure the stories behind these everyday objects aren't lost as things become more modern.
I'm looking for photos and memories from families across the world:
- The Origins: Did your family bring these with them when they immigrated, or did they buy them locally to feel 'at home'?
- The Food: What specific dish does your family always serve in these? (For me, it’s always Laksa or Chicken Rice!)
- The Sentiment: Does seeing a chipped or faded rooster bowl remind you of a specific person, a Kopitiam, or a place back home?
If you have a photo of a bowl you still use at home, please share! I’m trying to document how this 15th-century design still lives in our kitchens today.
