When did Sekiro click for you?

Hi all.

I'm currently on my first playthrough, 30 hours gameplay and have made it up to Sword Saint Isshin. How I got here, I don't have a clue. I've really enjoyed the exploration of this game and general combat with mobs. However I've always dreaded the boss fights.

I feel like this game still hasn't clicked for me, I am still hesitating, which from this sub, I know is defeat. I always mess up the red Kanji perilous attacks, I'm too slow to react or I usually respond the wrong way, or my mikiris doesn't aim towards the thrust etc.

After so many, many attempts at Great Shinobi Owl I felt flat, although the adrenaline from beating him was insane. It's just made me dread fighting more bosses knowing the fact I will be stuck on them for ages. I even avoid the mini-bosses where I can, because I know I'll be throwing myself at a wall for hours trying to beat them.

When did this game click for you where the combat just feels so natural and fluid and not a panic? Does it usually take several playthroughs? I love this game I just wish I was better at it!
