AITAH wanting decent parking?
Been having this argument with my roommates. And I wanted some others thoughts. Maybe I'm in the wrong and can get other perspectives. Or I'm in the right and can get, admittedly maybe some validation lol.
I will preface, the argument is done now. I have given up pushing it since all I'm doing is pissing them off. These are my two best friends, and the last thing I want is to upset them further and hurt our friendship. They're like family to me. I have already apologized to them and consider the matter dropped to keep the peace, its really not worth creating more tension.
The purpose of me posting here, is more for peace of mind. In my opinion, I thought my request was fair and made sense. They didn't exactly agree. So either people can understand my point of view and I can feel better knowing I wasn't wrong. Or I am in fact wrong and can move on. Whatever the judgement I will accept. I will refer to them as Guy and Girl.
So, the way our parking situation works. Every apartment gets a numbered spot assigned to that apartment only that tenant(s) can use. Back when we had different schedules, Guy always had the numbered spot, as he worked late and very likely would not get a parking spot when he got home. Me and Girl would just find a spot we could get as we got home. Worked out fine, no issue. There is about 4-5 good spots close to the house, and we always tried to park in those.
Recently they have now they have the same schedule at the same job. So they now drive together. 1 week, Guy drives, next week Girl drives, and they alternate. So whatever car they use is always in the numbered spot. This is where the issue starts.
The second car goes unused the entire week, it is just there to basically be stored until swapped. When they started, the got the backup car parked in the number 1 best non numbered spot for our house. Direct shot straight from our door. 7 second walk. I mentioned to Girl it seemed unfair that they have now permanently taken one of the good spots for their unused car, and since they will just rotate, that spot is now permanently theirs. It seemed unfair since, you guys already have the numbered spot. Whenever you drive anywhere you will always have your vehicle at the best spot. Why do you need both cars in ideal spots when only one will be used during the week. I don't recall exactly what she said, I don't want to lie. But it was around the vibes of oh well I want that spot. Not harsh or rude, just like I don't really care.
I didn't wanna push it because, well I hate bothering people. One day they needed to get both their cars worked on, so finally the spot opened up. And for awhile I, sometimes, got the spot. Others I just came home and someone else was already there. Nothing wrong with that, just not my luck that day etc.
Eventually they got the spot again and I was just like ok maybe I should say something. Because this would now start the cycle of once again one of the good spots being permanently taken leaving me less of a chance to get a good spot.
I talked to Guy about as he is typically more understanding when it comes to me being upset by something. Not in a negative way towards Girl, she's just more chill about things and doesn't care too much, very low maintenance vibes. I could tell he thought I was making a big deal over nothing but he still was like I don't care that much about the spot so I will talk about it. I thought it was all worked out and such. I don't remember this but Girl says a deal was made. I do not recall any deal, as this deal goes against the entire point I was trying to make. My point was that, since you guys always get the numbered spot, why does it matter that your backup and unused car also has to be as close as possible. Why do you get to hog two great spots and leave me with less chances to get parking. Apparently we agreed on a deal that on weekends they would take the spot, and during the week I would get the spot. I guess they honed in on the part I mentioned since I have to drive for work. My confusion was that again why do you need a good spot for your backup car that you dont use while it is parked wherever it is. The car you're using is always going to be in the perfect numbered spot. So I would not have agreed to this deal. I do not remember this being discussed. I can only assume we just misheard and misunderstood each other.
So anyway, on Friday I get home and lucky day, the best non numbered spot is open. They get home after me and mention moving my car. I was taken aback because again I have no idea why I would do that. I also just got home 30 mins prior and was slightly bothered I was being asked to move it for them. We kinda dropped it when I explained I do not remember this.
Later I wanted to talk about it because clearly there were misunderstandings and maybe we should figure this out so we can all be happy. I tried explaining my point again because to me, the deal made me think they did not understand the entire reason I brought this up. Which is again, why do they need to have a good spot for a car they don't use. What benefit is it to have it there on the weekend? Why do all this moving around and waste time for it?
This conversation did not go well. Mostly Guy and I talked, Girl didn't really participate. But Guy was definitely getting irritated and basically acted like I was so selfish for wanting all the spots to myself. When literally all I want is just the chance to get a decent spot, and that chance is lessened when you permanently take a spot. It seemed a little hypocritical to act like I was a selfish POS, when they want to have BOTH the numbered spot and one of the good spots.
So Reddit, AITA?
