I came across u/UdioAdam’s take on Invictus the other day and it stuck with me more than I expected.

There was something about it, especially the structure and that unexpected string ending, that felt like it was hinting at something beyond the poem itself. Not incomplete, but like it opened a door and then deliberately chose not to walk through it.

And I couldn’t stop thinking about that.

The limitation, of course, is that the original piece is bound to the length of the poem. Once Henley’s words are done, the piece kind of has to resolve… or fade.

So I wanted to explore a “what if.”

What if that ending wasn’t the end?

I ended up building this as a kind of second movement:

  • Keeping the original tone and philosophical weight intact

  • Adding a full orchestral / taiko-driven instrumental interlude to transition

  • Then continuing into a new lyrical section that tries to stay true to the spirit of Invictus, while pushing it forward

I also leaned on my long-time ChatGPT collaborator to help shape the additional verses (acting more like a sounding board than a replacement voice), and focused on keeping the moral logic consistent: autonomy, endurance, and ultimately… confrontation with fate.

To me, the original poem is about refusing to break.

The extension becomes about what happens after that, when you’re still standing, and now you have to choose how to move forward.

I tried to reflect that musically too:

  • Following the original modulation

  • Resolving back to the root

  • Then lifting everything up a full step at the end for a final “earned” ascent

Less “bigger ending,” more “transformed ending.”

I’m definitely not trying to improve on the original, but just explore the path it hinted at.

“Create me an image of anything you want, but do it in an art style that would be considered impossible to copy.”

That was it.

I didn’t tell it what subject to create, what aesthetic direction to use, or what themes to explore. What surprised me was that before moving deeper into the experiment, it helped define what “uncopyable” might even mean through four creative traits:

A private visual system where anatomy, symbolism, perspective, and structure obey unfamiliar rules.

Forms that appear to exist in multiple perspectives or impossible material states simultaneously.

##4. Medium ambiguity

Imagery that feels impossible to pin to a physical medium, creating uncertainty about how it could even exist.

Once that framework was established, I let it choose the subjects.
