how to become a better researcher by making yourself lazier
Before AI tools, when I needed to research something, I'd open fifteen tabs, skim articles, copy relevant quotes into a doc, and try to synthesize everything. I was thorough but slow. And a lot of the thoroughness was just anxiety about missing something.
Now I describe what I need, get a synthesized answer with sources, and spend my energy on evaluation instead of collection. Am I asking the right question? Does this source hold up? What's missing from this picture?
The research itself got lazier. But the thinking about the research got sharper. I spend less time on the mechanical parts and more time on the judgment parts.
I've heard people worry that AI makes you a worse thinker. My experience is the opposite, but only because I shifted where I spend cognitive effort. If I just accepted every answer without scrutiny, then yes, I'd be getting dumber. But using AI as the research layer while keeping the analysis in my own head has made my conclusions better.
