Testing 5Gbps

BLUF: I get good LAN speeds but WAN upload is only 50% of my download speeds.

I started out my fiber adventure a few years ago when it first came to me area. My “5 Gbps service,” was clean, at or slightly higher than 5Gbps both up and down. I had to drop it down a couple years ago to 2Gbps to save $. Recently they offered a deal that got me back to 5 at the same (or a little lower) than what I was paying for the 2Gbps plan. Happy days.

But even provisioned for peak capability, I am only testing at best 5Gbps download and quite consistently 2.3Gbps or slower for uploads. (Ookla CLI) on the same equipment (except moving to better 10Gb switches).

Anyway, no residential test ecosystem (Cloudflare, Fast, Ookla servers, etc.) will consistently sustain symmetric 5/5+ Gbps in both directions. Upload is always about half of the provisioned speed.

I had a tech try hard to help, but all we could determine was that I am provisioned per the plan, and the BGW620-700 I have is getting 5d/5u clear via the routers internal test. My own network tests are very clean at 10Gbps up/down using iperf across my NAS and PCs using 10G NICs and switches.

Is this the current norm? Or should I be asking other questions?

Thanks folks
