Pre-purchase inspection for a Toyota 86 in Gauteng / Vaal area?

Hey everyone,

I’m looking at buying a 2013 Toyota 86 in the Gauteng / Vaal Triangle / South Joburg area, but I’m not local so I can’t view it myself.

Can anyone recommend a trustworthy person or workshop to do a proper pre-purchase inspection on an 86/GT86?

I’d want them to check the usual 86 specific stuff: OBD scan, cold start, misfires/coil packs, oil leaks, gearbox/clutch, underbody, accident damage, major service history, valve spring recall proof and whether any mods/tune look dodgy.

Also, since I’m buying remotely, what’s the best way to avoid being misled by the dealer or an inspector who may be too friendly with them?

Any recommendations or advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Reliable, premium feeling used car under R400k with decent fuel economy?

Hi everyone, looking for some car suggestions here

My max budget is R400k, but I’m not looking to buy new. I’m happy with a used car, provided it has a full service history, is known to be reliable and has under 100k km.

I already have a Land Rover Defender that I’m fixing up, so that will cover my bigger car / 4x4 needs. For this car, I’m looking for something reliable, relatively fuel efficient, ideally not worse than 10 km/l unless it’s well under budget, premium feeling, and with decent resale value. I don’t necessarily value lots of gadgets, screens, or fancy electronics.

Something sporty looking would also be nice, although that’s not essential.
I’m probably going to avoid 2nd hand BMWs, since I already have one potentially demanding project car and don’t want my daily to become another reliability risk.

I’m also not generally a fan of electric cars, unless there’s a really strong argument for one in this price range.

What would you recommend?

Hi all,

I’ve got a 1996 Defender 110 300Tdi hard top that’s been my daily for years. It has huge sentimental value to me and I’ll never sell it. I recently got a big promotion and instead of buying another car, I’m thinking of putting the money into a proper rebuild on the Defender.

I want to do this properly, with longevity and reliability in mind. I’m not chasing huge power, but I am definitely over how sluggish the 300Tdi feels, so an engine conversion is a big part of the plan.

In an ideal world I’d go OM606, but they seem hard to find here in South Africa, so I’m most likely looking at an M57. I’m also undecided on whether to keep the R380 with an adaptor plate or go with the BMW 6-speed, so I’d really appreciate advice there.

Beyond the engine, I’ll also be doing:

- a respray (thinking like a dull baby blue or Keswick Green)

-galvanizing the chassis

-some interior work

The body is in decent shape, the doors are good, and the bulkhead is galvanised.

The rear is currently a hard top with windows, rubberised in the back and pretty much empty apart from a bench, so I’d also love ideas for the interior while still keeping it practical.

Would really appreciate any suggestions on high-priority jobs, things worth doing while it’s apart and any do it once, do it right recommendations.

Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated.
