Welcome to the community for Public Invention!

We believe that the most important inventions for humanity should be open-source hardware projects, patent-free, and accessible to everyone. This subreddit is a space for engineers, inventors, mentors, makers, graduate and undergraduate students, hackers, who are interested in becoming Humanitarian Engineers and Public Inventors.

What we do here:

Building Public Infrastructure: We host every 3rd Thursday, Inventors Gathering an online series around open-source hardware projects around the world. Everyone is welcome to participate.

Volunteer & Internship Opportunities: Since 2019, Public Inventors have collaborated on a mission-driven Humanitarian Engineering Solutions. This is a great way to boost your career, build your network, author a peer-reviewed paper, learn by doing, and be part of great teams working toward social impact.

Amplify PIHE Movement: Public Invention is a US 501c3 public charity dedicated to open-source engineering and the motto “Invent in the public, for the Public.”

Hi everyone! I’m looking for some local advice on recruiting volunteers for an upcoming non-profit event (Public InvCon 2026) at the Austin Central Library.

We have some heavy-hitting presentations, including content from NASA Artemis, and we’re looking for volunteers to help with:

  • Emcee & Presenter Support
  • Photography & Video
  • Registration & Welcome
  • Setup & Logistics

Beyond the main r/Austin sub, are there specific groups or discords you’d recommend reaching out to? We’re a 501(c)3, so this is strictly for community benefit and portfolio building.

Thanks for any leads!

Public Invention is looking for a few technical-minded folks to join our production crew for Public InvCon 2026.

We’re hosting at the Austin Central Library, Key Speaker from KidsOR featuring presentations from NASA Artemis and Engineers Without Borders. We need a solid Tech Ops team to ensure these humanitarian inventions are captured perfectly for the world to see.

If you’re looking to build your portfolio, are a student in RTF, or an AV hobbyist who wants to shoot in a nerdy-techy venue, we’d love to have you.

We are looking for three specific roles:

  • 🎬 (OBS/vMix): You’ll feel comfortable directing, managing multi-cam feeds, lower thirds, and handling the transition between live Austin speakers and remote presenters.
  • 🎤 Audio:  The library has a great setup—we just need you to make it sing and keep the levels balanced for the audience.
  • 🎥 Camera Operators (2): This is the fun part. You’ll be getting close-up, dynamic shots of actual hardware (ventilators, sensors, etc.) as they are being demoed. In the meantime, static tripods do their part; we need a good eye for framing.

Why help?

Building resources for the public good means scaling public infrastructure. But, how do we get there when so many legacy public resources are quietly disappearing?

Join as we discuss how to navigate the future with the compass of open source values. Victoria Jaqua, Director of Development for Open Source Medical Supplies (OSMS), will present Public Infrastructure III,  the third installment in her popular series inspiring us to launch open source solutions for an uncertain future.

We'll discuss:
- What should we do?
- Where should we focus?
- How can I help?

Victoria will give a short presentation, then lead a brainstorming session with Gathering participants. Please join us as we foster innovative ideas among a friendly community!
