Are they electromagnetically propelled like a railgun or gauss, chemically, etc?

I finished the campaign a few days ago and am looking to try vanilla multiplayer.

I probably restarted this mission over a dozen times before finally beating it. If the van spawned in the harbor, there was no way I was going to get out of there alive. I was only able to beat it if the van spawned on the outskirts of the town close to Alfa spawn point.
