My favorite find of the year! First hole of the day when it was found. Had never seen a coat hook in the form of a boot before.

Any pottery people here? Obtained at an estate sale of very well heeled, well educated, serious collector. He was known to facilitate getting serious items into museums and had a private museum of his own. One of his major interests was Taino culture and artifacts. Continued…

This piece doesn’t strike me as Taino or even American (from the Americas) but I’m not incredibly knowledgeable in this area. I know there are exceptions but I believe much new world pottery has a rounded bottom, not flat. His interests were wide and this could be from nearly anywhere based on his wider interests. Could also be a fake for all I know. Kind of has a Greek/Roman feel to me. I’d be more apt to bet authentically ancient than I would fake based on the collector.

▲ 20 r/Medals

What explains this variation? A cheap facsimile? Any reason this would be officially distributed to a soldier who earned it? Guessing a trinket for sale after the official medals became symbols of pride. First photo official medal, next photos my find, last photos the eBay example. Obviously mine is trashed, I’m just curious.
