English at Tufts

Hi!

I was accepted as a transfer into Tufts, love the English department at my current school, and was wondering if anyone here had any insight into the English program at Tufts, specifically relationships with professors and feedback given on work. Thank you!

Average Bowdoin Student

Hi! I was wondering if anyone would be willing to describe what they would perceive an average Bowdoin student to be like? I got accepted as a transfer student but am worried because I am not outdoorsy or active, as I perceive much of the student body to be, so I'm not sure about finding my people

Experience as a Transfer

Hi! I got in to Tufts as a transfer sophomore for the fall of 2026 and was wondering if anyone has transferred into Tufts and what their experience has been like, especially with finding community. I believe I'd have to live off-campus with a group of other transfers, and I am worried about never living on campus.

Transfer Advice

I currently go to Boston College as an English major and have been accepted into Tufts, Bowdoin, and Bates for transfer as a sophomore in the fall of 2026. I am interested in going to law school as of now, but I am not 100%. I may also be interested in communications or philosophy.

My freshman year has been very hard. I have generally enjoyed my academics (especially my English class, which was very small, with only 12 students, and my Theology/Philosophy course that was also pretty small). However, I don't necessarily feel I fit in with BC's monoculture. I haven't been able to make many close friends, despite joining many clubs and going to many school-sponsored events. I sometimes feel like the people around me are rude/preppy. I also haven't enjoyed the football or hockey games, which a lot of weekends in the fall/early spring semester revolve around

My high school was very small (300 people), and quite quirky/arts-focused, and I felt like myself there. I was very social and happy, with a large friend group, but it took me a year or two to enjoy it and find my people, which I wonder is happening here.

For Tufts, the clubs seem to be things I am interested in and signal a more kind, fun, quirky student body that I could more easily see myself fitting into. I am also interested in a lot of the courses and the emphasis on civic studies. However, I am worried about getting integrated into the community as a transfer, which is a key element for me, as I would likely have to live off-campus with a group of other transfer students. Also, I am unsure how the language requirement would affect my flexibility. I've also read that it is a very independent community where I would have to be very proactive, and I think part of my issue at BC so far has been my lack of proactivity.

For Bowdoin, I am interested in the close-knit community, the lack of a strict core, and the strong law school placement. However, when I visited a friend who goes there, though it was clearly a close-knit community, it felt like the majority of people there weren't my people, which I'm worried about, given it's a small school. I'm not interested in the outdoors and don't play any sports, which I saw as a common theme among the students. Also, I enjoy the proximity to Boston I have now and am worried about being in Maine, where all there is close by is a small town (as far as I know).

Staying at BC is still something I am considering, as I do enjoy the campus setup, many of the classes I have taken, and I have met a few good friends. I am nervous about making a jump to a new place when I'm not completely sure whether my issue is BC-specific or just because it's my first year (though I can identify at least a little lack of match socially). I really want to love my college and go somewhere that maximizes my social happiness, as friendship is extremely important to me.

I was wondering if anyone has transferred into any of these schools, knows what it's generally like to be a transfer student, can debunk any of my assumptions about these schools, or just has any advice on how to navigate this decision. Thank you so much.
