I have a background in hospitality and I'm obsessed with finding the best food wherever I go. Just spent a week focused entirely on eating in Tirana and wanted to share what I found.
Pazari i Ri (New Bazaar) — This is the real deal. Skip the restaurants facing the main walkway and go to the stalls and small places in the back alleys. The grilled meats and fresh salads here were some of the best I had.
Blloku district — This neighborhood has genuinely good restaurants mixed with overpriced tourist spots. The trick is to go at lunch when locals eat, not at dinner when it's all for show.
Lake Tirana area — There are a few family-run spots on the less developed side of the lake that serve incredible tavë kosi and fergese. You'll know them because there's no English menu.
Coffee culture — Tirana takes coffee seriously. The espresso culture here rivals Italy, and I say that without exaggeration. Almost every neighborhood café pulls a great shot.
Honest warnings:
- The restaurants right next to Skanderbeg Square are mostly mediocre and overpriced. Walk 5 minutes in any direction and quality doubles while prices drop.
- Some "traditional Albanian" restaurants near tourist spots serve frozen food. If the menu has 60+ items, be suspicious.
- Portions are huge. Don't over-order on your first visit.
