Why haven't we moved past essays?

I am in Europe, and to me it seems to pointless that 90% of my coursework is only long essays. Especially now with Ai this seems so pointless. Basically everyone uses AI right now, even half of my professors have course work where they say they used AI to help write it. So now we use ai, the professor uses ai...and our coursework is still mostly the thing that AI (mostly) excels at most.

Would case studies, or stuff like that be more effective? Ai cant be that original, what it can do is write an essay with a simplistic theme that the professor gives. And those AI checkers ruin it for so many students, i have made essays completely by hand and got under the passing grade because Turnitin detected AI, and my prof only looks at the Turnitin result and doesn't actually check what got flagged as ai.

Just so frustrating to spend so much time on stuff like this.

Books that depict the "normal" life from different countries and eras?

I have read The Good Earth and Pachinko and i think these 2 have become at least my top 15 books read ever.

I'm interested in any time period but i don't want a history book, i want the life presented as a story of a character/characters doesn't need to be real but can be.

I think i am interested in something from Japan, Southern Africa or the middle east! but anything is welcomed, i like this genre.

Any comics with a cool spin on the "zombie" apocalypse.

When i say zombie it doesnt have to be such exactly, just that humans get turn into something not-human and have to fight/compete with the normal humans.

I liked The Crossed, but im new to comics so i dont know what other examples to give.

(Just not the walking the dead)
