I moved into an old townhouse in Baltimore, MD this weekend. I’m renting. During my tour of this place everything seemed ok, nothing smelled weird. All closets, drawers, cabinets smelled fine. No visible signs of mold anywhere. I have had issues with mold in the past so I thought I knew how to inspect properly.

Then some time went by before move in, some construction happened, it rained a lot. I pick up the keys, and I smelled a musty smell downstairs.

My gf and I spent days trying to find the source. Finally she found it. The water heater, washer dryer, and components of the AC system are in a small closet underneath the stairs. There’s some old moldy wood flooring in that closet. From what we can see just a couple panels in front of the water heater (the heater is in a pan, I don’t think the moisture is coming from the tank).

I put some damp rid there but I’ve heard it takes a few days to weeks to work.

I’ve been running air purifiers and a dehumidifier in the downstairs area for days. We keep the windows open during the day to increase circulation.

I sprayed the wood with concrobium.

We want to tell our landlord but all of our stuff is in boxes taking up space and we want to create more room for the maintenance man to check it out.

Is there anything else for me to do? I want to do everything I can to make this place livable. Every move I’ve had has been a disaster and I’m exhausted.

I am moving this weekend.

The last time I moved, I just had my friends help. We got the job done because my friends are very strong but I said I wanted movers to help next time.

My plan would be to hire a few people to help my friends and me load up a UHaul. Everything is already packed and in storage.

I have two storage units and wanted to rent a 15 foot Uhaul and basically make two trips. It’s less expensive and the 15 footer is easier to drive.

Do I hire people for a certain amount of hours? Will they stay as long as it takes? Will they help me both load and unload?
