People who live in/near airports that are hubs for other airlines (DFW with AA, ATL with DL), why do you still fly United?

There are people who live in/near airports that are hubs of other airlines like DFW and CLT with AA, DTW and MSP with DL, etc. but would still fly United and would rather have a transfer rather than a direct flight (UA ATL->EWR->AMS instead of DL nonstop). Though there are folks who say that United hubs like IAH and EWR are on par with airports like Singapore and Dubai so that could be a reason maybe.. What makes someone pick UA over an airline that has a huge presence at their local airport?

Aren’t the 4 major US carriers just the same but with different metal colors?
