Hi! I'm reading this great series called Empire of the Vampire, and one of the things I really think the author did well was to incorporate words and phrasing that seem unique to the universe where the story is set. It's an alternate universe type of setting, but has some basis in French culture and also incorporates a religion that seems similar to Catholoscism. But there's also a sprinkling of modern phrasing that's mostly for comic relief and is very well timed. He does it all so well, it's tough to tell what he made up vs what might be actual ways of phrasing things from back in that time period (I'm not a historian, so I'll just call it medieval).

I'm trying to deconstruct what he did, but am having trouble. I know the end result is that I'm more immersed in his world, but am not sure how to do it this smoothly. It seems many authors try this and end up with too much otherworldliness and the reader ends up confused and unable to relate.

Has anyone come across or have any tips for accomplishing something similar when trying to world-build a culture and then sharing that culture in the story in a subtle way?
