Infrastory - The Toronto Model for Transit

Here's A must read piece by transit expert Jonathan English as to why Toronto transit puts all American cities except for NYC to shame! It's not subways, but rather the frequent suburban bus service introduced in the early 1960's.

The East Don Trail project team is pleased to report that work is currently underway on the trail section from the south approach boardwalk of Bridge #1 to the Taylor Massey Creek Bridge.

This work includes the final asphalt paving layer, topsoil placement and terraseeding for restoration, as well as construction of the access route on the south side of the Taylor Massey Creek Bridge as part of the multi-use trail connection to Charles Sauriol Park and the Lower Don River Trail.

Completion of this work is tentatively scheduled for early July 2026.

Members of the public are reminded to obey all signage and stay clear of restricted areas for their safety during construction.

A Different Kind of Cycling Campaign - Spacing Toronto

Thanks Spacing for publishing my article about the need to make completing the 72 km Loop Trail - and filling other trail gaps across the city - an issue for this October's municipal election.

Are you disappointed the City of Toronto dropped pedestrian priority zones from the yongeTOmorrow proposal downtown? The deadline to complete the survey and call on the City to bring those back is TOMORROW!

For those who aren't already aware, nominations for mayor, city council, and school trustee officially opened today! Let's use this thread to note any new candidates as they come up.

While it was expected Brad Bradford registered to run for mayor, there are some more notable items on the council front:

  • Ward 2 (Etobicoke Centre) - Jen Alexander - who writes The Etobicoke Voice - will take on Stephen Holyday who's THE WORST member of council. She's a great advocate for active transportation and for Etobicoke as a whole.
  • Ward 4 (Parkdale-High Park) - Diana Chan McNally is in the race who's an excellent advocate for housing and harm reduction.
  • Ward 5 (York South-Weston) - Unfortunately, Chiara Padovani (who lost in 2022 by 94 votes) won't be the only challenger. Daniel Di Giorgio - who ran for the Ontario Liberals last year - also entered the race which increases the risk of vote splitting if Frances Nunziata seeks re-election.
  • Ward 21 (Scarborough Centre) - Krissan Veerasingam is worth keeping an eye on.

Daniel Tate and his so-called IntegrityTO are spewing their carbrained nonsense again cheering on those who are violating the RapidTO transit priority lanes. The point of these transit lanes is to prioritize transit vehicles with 50-100 people over cars with only one or two people.

If you use Facebook, I encourage you to roast them over this.

Looks like Toronto will now have two open wards this October. Councillor Gord Perks - who represented Parkdale-High Park for 20 years - confirmed he will not seek re-election. As a former constitutent, I disagreed with his handling of Parkside Drive, but thank him for being a reliable ally for cycling and social justice matters. Best of luck to the candidates who choose to run in that riding when nominations open tomorrow.

Just for a friendly reminder, the Growing Marlee-Glencairn Phase 3 consultation - which will include the Beltline Gap Connections gap which is of importance to us cyclists - will be happening TOMORROW (4:00 - 8:30 PM) at 70 Ridge Hill Drive.

While I doubt Doug Ford would listen, Beth Kaplan's column in the Toronto Star makes a good point on the need for Ontario to learn from Paris about tackling gridlock. It involves transit, bikes, and green spaces. NOT cars.
