Understanding Fit at Tufts

Hi! I’m trying to understand the real student experience at Tufts University, especially for engineering.

I’m interested in engineering (possibly mechanical/physics), but I also care about, a collaborative and not overly intense environment, a campus that feels connected, being around people who are curious.

Tufts seems very balanced, but I’m trying to understand what that actually feels like day to day.

A few questions:

  1. What is the culture like in engineering (collaborative vs competitive)?
  2. How social is the campus, and what does that look like?
  3. Does the campus feel cohesive or more spread out?
  4. What kind of student thrives at Tufts?
  5. What surprised you most after enrolling?

I’m also comparing Tufts to schools like Northwestern, Duke, and Rice, so any insight there would be really helpful.

Understanding Fit and UCSB

Hi! I'm a HS junior making my college list and I’m trying to understand what UCSB is actually like as an engineering student.

I’m interested in engineering (possibly mechanical/physics), but I also really care about enjoying my environment.

I'm drawn to UCSB's ability to have great academics while still having a good social scene and being really pretty and great to spend time outside.

I’m wondering how that balances with academics.

Mainly: What does a normal day/week look like as an engineering student? Does the social scene ever become distracting, or is it manageable? How strong are internship opportunities compared to other schools? Do people actually take advantage of the environment regularly? What type of student tends to thrive?
